NY chicken lover!!!!

I went to TSC today too. My chicks are still cuter. :p Theirs all had pasty butt and seemed kinda runty. nyah nyah.

On the sad side, down one chicken at head count this evening. Did not hear any alerts and was outside most of the day, but maybe it happened when I was in the house or maybe it was a snatch and grab while she wandered off. No evidence, so I guess it's slightly possible she went off to be broody or got stuck in a box somewhere. Figures, when I sell off a bunch of my adults the rest get picked off by predators. grr.

He's sexy and he knows it! ;) Four chicks out, lots of pips in the brinsea but not too many in the hovabator. I hope some of annie's eggs hatch for me. =(

Now now, Rancher....you know that silkies can be counted on to go broody at least once a year. Isn't that why you LOOOOOVE them?

Au' contrair, I don't love them. I still think they are aliens from another planet.

They go broody cuz they lay far to few eggs to make them worth keeping. If they don't brood folks might not keep them. I won't keep them even them. They are the pocket pet of the chicken world. I saw a lady with one sticking out of her purse.

Hello! I just joined the board a few days ago-! Fellow NYer here, just outside of Troy/Albany. There's so much great information here, but sometimes I get so lost trying to sort through it all- I figured I'd ask you guys!
I was wondering if any of you knew of a local place or person that I could get a few EE chicks from? I should be getting six chicks in the mail around the 16th and I'm belatedly realizing that I should've ordered more (what with shipping trauma and predators ;_; eek)! I'm really only looking for about three (I'm living in fear of chicken math- though I know it'll get the better of me, I still feel like I should put in some effort to keep my flock small-ish...!)

Anyway, any help or information would be greatly appreciated, thanks! :)

Welcome to the insanity.

Now I don't know how much you know about chickens but please keep a tin foil hat in your pocket in case you come across any Silkies. They can read you mind and put you in a trance to take them home. They are not a chicken for the weak minded. They aren't really chickens at all. They are aliens from another planet here to suck your brains out.

Everyone was worried about those POD things, but I think they should do a remake and use Silky chickens instead.

Not off my rocker. I don't own a rocker to be off.

I'm happy to hear her henliness showed up unharmed.

End to end butting of lumber is best done on a support post. Sure you can use metal plates (or wood ones, cuz I''m cheap) but don't plan on EVER laying anything on top of it, including wet sticky snow,it will fail sooner than later. IF you are determined to butt it, use a brace, either metal or wood, twice as long as you think it need to be and on BOTH sides of the abuttment, cuz when it snows around here, it really snows. (well, except this past winter, but it's gonna catch up with us sometime soon)
Yep, she's kinda of a 'special' chicken - has always had a bit of the Derp in her. I think she just decided she didn't wanna go in that night and hid out. If anyone gets taken by a predator it will be her since she's always foraging away from the main group.

Good advice on the run. haven't decided whether I will cover it for real or use knotted 2" netting that will supposedly work with snow. It won't have a 'roof' either way, but could have wire on top. not sure. DH is always busy these days so I am going to try and do as much as I can myself. He'll probably take pity on me at some point. :)

Ha!! Oh no, thank you for the advice-! Unfortunately it comes too late and I've already been brainwashed by the adorable-ness of silkies!

They remind me of affectionate muppets! Ah well, perhaps I should wear a tinfoil hat anyway to prevent me from getting (too many) more!

My silkies were ADORABLE.. But.. I had to sell them.. I had ultra floofy ones and they needed haircuts so they could eat, feet cleaning, yada yada yada.. They were too high maintenance for me..

but they were cute!! =) I'd probably keep ONE, but I had like 20 of em. :p

I think I'm definitely going to use the landscape timbers. That sounds like a great idea, and I can use a timber to fasten the two together. Just went out and measured the current area and it can probably work with 16x16ish since the area with the awning won't need it. I wish you and SO were closer, I'd try to bribe you to come over and give advice. :)
