NY chicken lover!!!!

Well, I will have more eggs if you decide you want some.
Didn't you sell your flock? Saw the CL ad so figured they'd be gone by now. I think I have enough chicks for now especially since I think I now have THREE broodies..

My silkie is broody again....since her chest is BARE, I figure she is serious about hatching. I gave her 5 eggs last night and I have 2 in the bator in case none of hers hatch. Of course if the bator chicks hatch I'll put them under the broody anyway. I am sick and tired of the dust and SMELL in the house, I think I'll let the hen do a hen's job and raise the bator chicks, if they hatch. Now to find the chicken calendar so I can mark when lock down and hatch dates are. I'll never remember 3 weeks from now to stop turning the eggs.

I have the two broodies that have been going strong, so I gave them some eggs from javagirl today. Was going to try chicks on them, but neither had been sitting three weeks and I keep removing the eggs so was thinking they might kill em. And since I had eggs...

AND my SS is missing again, so I think y'all can guess what that means. Yesterday I was worried she was dead, now I think she's just hiding in the woods with a pile of eggs. She just showed up this morning to eat. :p

You're gonna need a new coop soon, at the rate you are hatching chicks up there

Evening all! Silkie eggs are now in lockdown. Hoping they all hatch. Got one side of the coop framed up Hoping the rest of it goes well. Babies are doing well. I will be glad when I wont have to wipe butts anymore. I hope everyones hatch goes well.

I will NOT be selliing the BA's - they just lay too frequently and BIG eggs. Selling the Chanties - I've had a couple calls and emails but nothing definite yet. In no rush really until these chicks need an outdoor place to go so, a month or so at least.

This winter wasn't much of a test, but the wet snow and an ice storm didn't bother it a bit. Some stuck to the wire and looked pretty and most just fell on through to the ground. Go ahead and PM if you need to know something.

Got to admit to being obsessed with using landscape timbers for fencing and foundation timbers. I used them for a 4x8 raised bed for vegetables last year and everytime I looked it screamed foundation for a chicken house. Wish I had done that for the coop instead of piers. Tried them with the 6x6 duck coop and it feels like it is sitting on cement. The trick to make them solid for fence or building is to dig a shallow trench and line it with small stone/sand so it is easy to level and overlap the timbers like a brick wall. Then you drill pilot holes and nail them together with 5-inch pole barn nails. The retaining walls on the upper side of the coop and run are build that way and can't be moved even a fraction of an inch.

I was even considering using them for a little "log cabin" to house the current and future roosters for growing out as meaties. They seem like they would be impregnable to anything smaller than a bear.

How does it hold up to snow? That's exactly what I want to do! Mind if I PM you if I have questions?

Morning all and welcome Kitkat. Babies in the brooder are doing well. I will be happy when I dont have to clean butts anymore and so will they! Chickens must have short memories because noname wandered accross the road again yesterday when dh let the girls out to freerange. He had to chase her back. That hawk might get lucky yet if she keeps that up. Elanors foot looks better. Another soak and inspection today but I think its healing okay.

Silkie eggs go on lockdown tomorrow. I think I have to pull one more and am hoping for the rest to hatch. Everyone says silkies are broody but mine are a year old now and no signs of it yet. I am hoping one of the girls goes broody as I would like to hatch their eggs under them. I guess time will tell. My dd informed me I need to make a spot for the surprise they are building me. I am pretty sure its another silkie coop. So excited. She said the end of april but we will see as they are busy but I will post pics when I get it.

Speaking of coops...we are at the framing of the walls stage. Had to put down 2 layers of plywood on the floor as the first layer seemed really light and cheesy. It sounded like it was going to break when my dh kneeled on it. sigh. another 56 dollars. Cant believe the price of lumber. Good thing we have quite a bit of our own rough cut lumber but we might have to get some more. It takes a little more finageling with rough cut to get everything just right and dh is a perfectionist about it, even for a chicken coop, so its going to get real interesting now. Taking pics as we go so we can make an album to post for you all to look at.

I hope that all of you who are hatching right now hav e a good hatch. Keep your fingers crossed for mine!!!

We don't mind. We have 4 of the leghorn EE's in lockdown right now due tomorrow. We also have some 2 week olds (EE,OE, some mixes) coming back this afternoon from a school hatch we donated eggs to. We had told them that if they didn't find homes for them they could bring them back. We have lots of room.
Ginny thanks for the update on the chicks its nice to know that they are doing good. We candled the buckeyes last night. 50% growing 50% not, the ones that aren't look to be the same size and color pattern. Our theory is that you may have one hen that doesn't let the roo near her.

I started collection for myself right after your eggs. I have the same...about 50% and all the same egg shape/color that are fertilized and came to the same conclusion. Either roo only likes one hen or only one hen lets the roo breed. there is no accounting for taste!1 Any ideas with getting my other hen(s) more attractive? good luck! ginny
