NY chicken lover!!!!

Geez I don't have time to come on for 1-2 days and have 7 pages of posts. WOW!

I put my del roo back out after giving him Vit B Complex he seems a little better not 100% but I can't keep him in too long then I would have to reintroduce and I am really not set up to handle that... I have too many chicks.

Rancher thanks for the laughs.

All the CountryMax chicks in store today were pre-ordered, but if there is enough interest, they may place another order. The order form I seen online only had a few standard breeds. In store they had RIR, Polish, Barred Rock, Golden Comet, SLW, White Giant, EE and Turkin. Put my name on the list to place an order. Cortland store gets theirs from Cackle Hatchery.

Well I think I've decided not to do the hatching thing anymore. Perhaps just the BR's since they are nice but when it comes to replacements I'm just going to order the pullet special and not have to deal with roo chicks.

I think it would be cheaper and easier to every two years order new chicks and replace the flock.

Is this your only Del roo? If things don't work out I've got Del chicks and I'm sure most of them are roos. I've also got some chicks coming from MO and there are sure to be roos in there too.

No out of the 4 dels I got from you last Nov(??) 3 were roos. the others are getting culled this weekend I hope. As long as I can get a table and a sharp knife together by then.

I think I will keep one though since they are dual purpose and I can use him to mate with all the hens so I get bigger birds. I think my reasoning is correct.

Morning all! I woke up to 5 babies in the bator this morning. I am hoping the other 7 hatch. They all look good and are active and chirping. Love having babies.

Question--are red sexlinks larger than rhode island reds? My sexlink chicks seem to be growing faster and are larger than the rir chicks and br chicks. They were all hatched at the same time (I presume because we ordered them as a package) and while they were all the same size for a few days, these seem to be growing bigger faster. Just curious. They certainly are more docile and more easily handled. Dh and I have a wager going about how many of the rir chicks are boys since we ordered straightrun. If you cross a sexlink with a rir roo, do you get more sexlinks?

Diva hens were late off the roost again. They do like to sleep in. However, when they saw I had a bag of grapes in my hand, they dropped like stones off a cliff in a hurry!!! Anything for a grape!

Guess I will have to set up another brooder box now that the silkies are hatching. Have to work on the runs today as well and freshen them up as well as throw a little de in the terrorists brooder box because 26 little pooping butts makes for a little more maintanance to keep the smell at bay. They are certainly eating well and a lot!

Oh--one more question. What is a good age to send the boys we end up with to freezer camp? Dont want to annoy the neighbors too much with excessive crowing. Just trying to get an idea as to when we will be processing..Thanks all!

I have 4 year old RIR's that still lay really well. They came from a semi local farm. They are twice the size of the hatchery RIR's I got last year. Last year was the 1st and only time I bought hatchery birds. 4 died of heart attacks after laying an egg at 7 months old. I'll never buy a hatchery bird again. Back to hatching my own. Roo;'s are delicious

So I came home to 2 babies out and one working on it. 2 eggs have pipped but not zipped yet. So out of 12 eggs i still have 9 to go. I am hoping they will hatch in the next couple of days. The babies look good and healthy. Have to set up their brooder box tomorrow.

The tiny terrorists downstairs have a new little perch courtesy of dh. They were on it right quick, not like my hens, who took forever to figure it out. I just hope the delinquents dont use it as part of their jail break plan! Time to get the screen window cover on!

Thanks for all the support my peeps! Heres hoping the rest hatch as well!
congratulations, Grandma!!

yw. LOTS of reading there. Besides myself, Miss lydia gives a lot of good info from experience. Not what a book says. That is what I like about that thread. All real world broody experience. And if you ever question "should I interfere", remember chickens survived for 10,000 years without human help. If anything, we have screwed them up

as humans have with a lot of things........
