NY chicken lover!!!!

When I left AL some of the kids were sick with something. I keep a thing of wipes near the computer, since there is only one and wipe it down before I use it.

vmdaniel - It's nice to be home. Now to get things back in order. We left the lid off the scratch can last evening and I found four mice in it this AM. Not to mention it's nearly empty. I just tipped it and let them run out. Over 50# 's of scratch and boss used up in five weeks. DW doesn't set mice traps. I'll be working on that for the next week.

I've got to make one with the bucket and water. I'm sure to find how on Youtube.

Thanks for the welcome back everyone.

I get mice in the wateres in the winter a lot. They have to get it somewhere & once they climb into the bucket they can't get out & drown. You need to provide soemthing they can walk on, but then they fall off into the water & can't get back on. Someone said tape plastic over the top of the bucket with a 50 cent size hole in the middle, they fall into the hole...I find just the bucket with water works ok, even though I'm not doing it on purpose. Or, sometimes I find mice in the feed buckets if they are tall 5 gallon, they get in, but can't get out...usually babies though.

Is anyone here going to the NE Poultry Congress, middle of January in Springfield?

I plan on going & having a sales table. What I'd like to do is get an idea of how many chicks I should bring. Here's my list.
black & blue copper Marans
Lavendar Orps...I hope they start laying soon
Silkies-blue, black & splash, possibly a few grey (silver partridge) white & partridge-I bought a couple of gorgeous roos from Catdance & Blakes Sensational Silkies, who are the sires of the chicks.
Coronation Silkies

I've sold my blrws...might have a few older chicks though if I don't presell them before.

Has anyone tried to print the coupons for Purina sent by BYC? I have tried and tried but keep getting a error response even though I have Java installed.

Makes me very upset.

Anybody hear from stony lately? If you are reading this stony...I was wondering how often rir hens go broody. I have one that is broody now but I am not hatching chicks now. I am hoping she will be broody again in the spring. She basically owns the nest box she is in and covers everybodys eggs when they come in to lay and gets real crabby when I come and take them. She doesnt peck me, just growls and screams at me. I am hoping she will be a good broody and hatch some babies in the spring.

Meanwhile, my broody silkie sara is just not giving up. She sits on nothing and is determined to hatch something out of thin air! Sassy is a wanna be but hasnt started sitting yet. She gets really witchy when she does and likes to steal eveyone elses babies.

Gave everyone treats tonight and my big girls are finally looking like chickens again. I think their molt is almost done. I have decided that they will be replaced come spring and freezercamp will be where they go. Except for Elanor. She is a good broody and beautiful golden laced wyandotte with a great personality. I am hoping she will be a fabulous mom and hatch me some chicks. She gets a pass on freezer camp.

Have a pleasant evening all.

. This is the 1st year my RIR's went broody. And I'll say this, in all honesty they probably always would have gone broody if I had left faux (like that...use it a lot in the furniture world

) eggs in the nest. 3 of my 7 old girls went broody this year and the other old girls were thinking of it. Do this in the spring. Either let eggs sit in her nest everyday or remove the eggs and replace them with faux eggs. I bet she goes broody again in the spring

Ugh, my half blind hen is missing from the coop tonight. I checked the duck coop, the old cat carriers that the ducks lay their eggs in, the place I'm keeping the 'ducklings' (I use that term loosely now), the place she decided to go broody the last time, under all the decks, the place the silkie went broody in, and nothing. I just lost my first hen; I don't want to lose another in the same week. I'm hoping she just has a nest going somewhere and has picked a really odd time to be broody. I don't even have one of her chicks. I have her adopted daughter from Featherz, but the only chick I ever hatched from her was about a month and a half ago, and I gave her to the woman that gave me Thistle as a thank you and so the woman could have a piece of Thistle still in her flock. She only gave her to me because she has predators lurking and a half blind hen does not do well in that environment.

Sigh, I seem to be losing birds left and right. I hope she turns up tomorrow morning when I let everyone out of the coop and give them their morning treats.

I had to install the Java program. After I did the coupon printed out for me.

My bad. I had forgotten that Firefox does not always work with certain sites. I switched to Explorer and printed it off just fine.

I've had this problem before and forgot to try it with Explorer. I do like Purina and just used up a bag. So more will be nice.

Pyxis - losing birds left and right? That is not good. Something is wrong and must be done to stop the loss.

http://horstmanspoultry.com/ has rosecomb RIR's and I expect I'll order eggs from him. If half hatch that will be good. Though I honestly don't know what I'll do with the roosters. I'm leaning to switching to rosecomb birds though I've not had a Wyandotte as a good layer.

That's a good coupon. I had to wrestle with Firefox a bit, but I eventually won and managed to print it out.

The dark Brahma bantams on that site are beautiful. I'd like more banties, as they're charming little things - I may have to order some eggs in the spring.
