NY chicken lover!!!!

Thanks for making me feel better about eating snow (not me... the chickens). :)
I would've put up the second water pail, but my brother in law's in the hospital with a gall bladder infection and stones. It looks pretty bad. He had a tube placed in the gall bladder this evening, which was very risky, as his blood pressure is dangerously low, his white and red blood cells are very high and he's having trouble breathing. He is on a ventilator. He's also a smoker and is VERY overweight, at well over 400 pounds.

Hi all, I am surprised at how many people are here from NY. Nice to see so many people from WNY here. I live in West Almond, NY with my husband, son, daughter and grandson. I am about 1 hour east of Olean and 1/2 hour west of Hornell. This is a fantastic site! I currently have 54 RIR and am getting around 36 eggs to hatch out next week.

Welcome to the party.

Chick - I hope things turn out well with your brother in law.

I couldn't figure out why the BM hens were going to the BR coop to lay their eggs. The tonight I noticed that one of the feed jugs had been chewed and that the wooden egg I just put in the nest box there was gone.

I suspect a squirrel. I've set a trap near the coop so I hope I catch whatever it is tomorrow. I shut the coop door at night so I know it's not a night predator.

Once I catch the culprit I'll make some changes in the coop putting in a new nest box and covering the front with felt for the winter cold.

I wonder if the squirrel took the chick that is missing or if it got scared and ran off. It would have been rather big for a squirrel.

I'll keep you posted on what happens.

BTW, I'm hosting the Winter Granny Square Swap. You don't have to have chickens to participate so if you know some one who crochets, tell them to join us on BYC.

my guess is a rat. Rats chew through plastic to get to feed and eat chicks and eggs.

Yes it is ..I had my son pick one up ..then I saw how teenie it was ..we will make do with it ..we have 9 chickens ..I think I will put a small cooking pot in it or something else that will transfer
the heat & be a little deeper . I had been doing Ranchers trick ..adding boiling water in the morning to their water bowls to thaw them ...
I always bring out fresh fermented food for them in the morning & now a hot cup of water ...I always forget the egg basket . Hopefully I wont need to tomorrow ..so I can bring the basket ..LOL

I've been catching squirrels and this isn't the first time a container has gotten chewed. I will get and set some rat traps as well. Tomorrow I'll clean the coop too. It's the new hoop coop so there is not place for a rat to hide. I still think it's a squirrel as this had to have taken place during the day.

Whatever it is it's in for a surprise when it tries to eat that wooden egg.

a small hav a hart baited with crack corn will work for either.

My neighbor across the street found one of my ceramic eggs easily 150 yards from where it was taken. I bet that coon or skunk was a little surprised when he tried to bite down
