Wow... we must not be getting the same weather here today (Friday). It rained this morning and then turned to snow. Nothing heavy and nothing stuck. I'm sure it will change tomorrow, but we've lucked out so far! Chickens spent the day outside today.

Except last night (overnight) we had so much wind I was afraid the coop might blow over.

Yeah I got that weather too. About 9:00 when I was leaving the house. They were fine. Even though I both runs covered I leave the door to one of them open so they can go out if they want. They do too. Rain or shine.

Ive seen many male Dogs mark their territory ...dont know if females do it too ..

Yes a cat is not a dog ...or a fox..but it seems they all do it ..

I have seen them during the day ..attacking my chickens . And heard them at night ..They have barked a alarm call at me ..when I caught one chasing my cat .
Most of the time I hear a vixen (Female ) call .

So I am asking why male urine ?

did your friend have the fox /coyote problem in the late spring ? That was when we saw them in the day time here ..They probably had to feed pups ..so they were out in the day too .

Morning all,
We're getting a bunch of snow here. Actually drove out this morning to bring my son to school and turned around be cause I was too scared to not only make it up the hill and out of the valley to get him there, but was terrified of driving back down it on the way home. So we came back home and my husband brought him and he was just a few minutes late. I am terrified of driving in snow, and I have a 4WD vehicle. How sad is that. LOL

If you go slow & take your time you will be fine .
We have never had 4 wheel drive ...Just front wheel drive on our cars ..some years we dont even have snow tires ..just new ..all weather tires .

One year our road was not even plowed ..6-12 inches came down in hours (anyone remember that year ? we had one lane ( 2 tire tracks ) down our road from the cars ...that had already been ..That was Scarey ! You could hear the snow hitting the bottom of the car.. I didnt stop I just kept going till I got to my unplowed driveway LOL

I am thinking of covering my run ..with all this rain it is too moist in there..
My chickens dont seem bothered by snow or rain . the moist run bothers me though .
Do you think we will ever have enough snow to build up on top ?
if they want a dry area they go under our back deck ..plenty of dry dirt under there to scratch up & fling around

I don't have all the answers. I just do what I do and pray. So far so good.

The winds were crazy here last night and this morning. My back yard is a wreck. The coop and the chooks made out fine, although there are branches down all around the coop, including one about ten feet long that struck the roof and fell right in front of the door as I was standing in the garage dithering about going outside. Had I not been dithering, I would have taken that sucker in the head, which, although probably not lethal, wouldn't have been conducive to good health.

The poor bees got the worst of it. The wind uprooted a forty-odd-foot pine tree, which fell down on the bee deck. The railings of the deck splintered (2X8s - it was a major hit), and one hive took a direct hit and was knocked off the deck. The other hive fell onto its side, but wasn't otherwise damaged. Alan went out this evening and found that the hive that was knocked off is nearly empty, but the one that was only tipped over is jam-packed with bees. We think that the workers from the trashed hive went to the other one. The queen in the tipped-over hive is fine, but we suspect that the other queen is dead, as the remaining bees in that hive aren't clumping up as they would to protect her. They've been set upright, and we're heading to BetterBee to get a queen excluder so that the remaining workers from the damaged hive can get into the intact one, but the queen (if she's still alive) can't. Poor bees. We feel so bad for them.

I also have roof damage from where the wind ripped off a section of shingles, so I'll be putting in a homeowner's insurance claim for the roof, the bee deck, and tree removal. At least we'll get a LOT of firewood for next year out of it, although it's just white pine.

I let my chickens out yesterday when I got home from work (about 2). All the show had melted and they did fine in the wind.. =)

NN babies coming soon!! (I hope).. 14/16 of my shipped eggs (all the way from Texas!!!) show good development..

Oh Hen! How can you not feel sorry for your bees???? Poor things. I think the wind here was worse yesterday than with Sandy. I heard trees going down every where. One went down in my horse pasture across the fence. Like you I was dithering and had I done turnout on time, the horse probably would have gone though the fence trying to escape it.

How is white pine to burn? I despise that species! I walk around uprooting all the saplings this time of year! Good luck on bee hunting!!

Morning all. Sounds like everyone had interesting weather yesterday. Dh ended up pumping out the back yard 4 times before lunch. Rain finally stopped then. Didnt get the snow they were predicting. Left the cheeps locked up but I guess the terrorists worked Dh for some outdoor time last night before dark. They so own him!
