NY chicken lover!!!!

Heartbroken...
I went to feed the chickens this morning and discovered a predator got in last night. I'm guessing a weasel. Feathers all over and necks broken. Nothing eaten. Killed 7 hens. 5 black australorps and 2 red sex links. I know it could have been much worse. I still have 29 left, 2 being roosters. No others are injured.
Spending the day cleaning, setting traps and reinforcing.
My heart just sank when I saw that this morning.
Oh no! I am so sorry for your loss....

Hope you get it.

Evening all. Are you all prepared for the onslaught of snow again??? We are forecast for 4-8 inches. I let everyone out to freerange today. The boys have been scuffling. I had to yell at Olaf to leave his brother Hane alone. Poor Hane was in one of the nesting boxes, trying to avoid Olaf. Camp crock pot may be seeing another volunteer soaking in the hot tub. Gave everyone some cooked carrots and cabbages. My silkies got the eggs I pulled plus a couple of cracked ones along with cooked carrots and the fat from the hamburgers I cooked last night. They didnt finish it all and so the terrorists got the bonus. They also went into the divas run and stole their cabbage and ate it. Poor Elanor was trying in vain to restore order but without her sisters help, it was all in vain.

I have finally caught the egg eater in the diva coop in the act. I opened the nesting box doors to look for eggs and there was noname, with yolk on her beak and an egg pecked open and the insides eaten. She tried to play it cool but it was hard to ignore the broken egg and the yolk dripping off her beak. I yelled at her and tossed her out of the box. I am pretty sure she knew she had done wrong and was grateful that I hadnt executed her on the spot. I thought about it. Really. Still might.

Rancher--nice that you have an enabler.

Chickenstalker---catch a few more of those and you will have a nice jacket. I am partial to coyote myself but dh mumbles something about extinction when I ask for a jacket.

Night all and may all your weasel traps work and they all die! Stony---that cat is worth every penny!

The aggressor in the Roo Wars has been positively identified, and is now on the agenda for a one-way trip to Camp Crock-Pot. As I thought, it's the Dominique/Sussex cross. He's big and lovely, and has a nice rose comb that would be handy in chicks, but he's nasty towards the other boys, and he's getting rough with the hens. Papa Captain Morgan is up on the roosts tonight, so he's pretty well back to normal physically, but he's still terrified of the Dom cross, as the beastly thing keeps going after him unprovoked. A little blustering and scuffling is one thing, but constant full-fledged battling won't be tolerated. I have to go close the duckehs up in the coop, and will be putting the culprit in the dog kennel so he can be sent to Camp Crock-Pot in the morning. I have plenty of roosters - no jerks allowed! Besides, I have a hankering for Annoying Rooster and dumplings.

The 2 one year old roosters I am using for breeding this year got into it yesterday. The older one (by 2 months) had been chasing the younger one around. But the older one is the smaller rooster. Johnny, the younger had enough and stood his ground, then fought back. Clyde, the older, did not have a chance. They are both bloodied but Clyde got the worst of it. Hope fully they have things worked out.

MMMM--annoying rooster and dumplings...soooo goood!

Chilly out this morning and we are forecasted for heavy snow. Hopefully not till after I get home from work tonight. The cheeps are going to be so mad after having been out freeranging the last few days. They look so raggedy right now because they are molting, at least the terrorists are. The divas and silkies are looking splendid, having come through their molt already. I do need to give the silkies a bath and blowdry to really get them looking top notch but that will have to wait till warmer weather, which we arent supposed to have until april. Sigh.

Be safe during this storm everyone. I hope those with weasel problems got the little buggers. Hawk watch is going on here.

Sounds tasty!
One of the GLW boys had both eyes swollen shut Saturday night, but looked fine last night. Can't tell them apart right now, as both of them have equally bloody rose combs and wattles. I used to be able to tell by one having frost bite on his wattles, he was the bully of the two, but wasn't present at the attack to positively identify the culprit. The sister has been an excellent layer, so I want the boys for the genes. And they are great watchdogs of the flock, so hopefully the feud is done.
Got my brooder tank back this weekend, haven't quite figured out how to wash it out though. Not dragging it into the bathtub, too cold to play outside in water. Come on Spring, I need some warm weather!

I am sooo sick of this cold!! Spring is not coming soon enough! Anyways all 5 of my chickies that hatched over the weekend are doing great! I'm pretty sure they have already grown lol! Now I just need to get my hands on some fertile eggs so I can fill up the bator again! I could use my own but they all would be mutts. I'm thinking maybe some blue or lav orps? My hubby will love it hehe. ;)

Just marking my spot.

Looks like either the new BR or Del hen has started to lay. Found a brown egg in the EE coop last evening. Then I dropped the darn thing in the coop and broke it. Had to make a mad dash to get rid of it before the chickens got to it.

I will be keeping both of them with the lave amer rooster. They're likely to lay a nice large egg and their daughters hopefully will too. The blue hen doesn't lay a large egg and should be by now.

ta, ta for now,

Rancher

Now I can't make any guarantees, but I can always use more manure. I can only give you what they lay. I'd have to give you all the eggs from that coop.
