NY chicken lover!!!!

Thanks guys! I just put the eggs in lockdown so fingers crossed! I looked up some pictures of day 18 eggs and they do look normal, I'm still a little worried about the air cell but time will tell.

What kind of eggs are you hatching? Mine went into lockdown yesterday. I woke up to one small external pip this morning.. 12 hours later, it's cracked a tiny bit more next to the original pip.

Hi all! So we just got some ducks, and all the threads that I read about them being easy is not true..lol I saw that we can put them outside earlier than chicks, so I wanted to see what others thought about it? When did you put your ducks out (I'm hoping someone has ducks around here?) I'm excited to say that we added 3 more white pullets (will find out what they are when they are bigger), 3 barred rocks today, and next week 3 black sex links :D

How well do the ducks and older chickens normally mingle? I have 6 girls out back already, and I know I am supposed to do the chicks and chickens slowly, but I am not sure how to do the ducks.

Just for fun, here are my newest babies!

My ducks are about a month old now, and are essentially feathered out. They could go outside, but some of the run is pretty revolting and mucky right now, so I'm holding off until we clean it out this weekend. My ducks and chickens live together with no problems. The ladies nest together, the ducks actually sleep up on the roosts sometimes (we have wide roosts), they feed together - there's no drama. Now that I'm up to thirteen ducks they'll be getting their own home and enclosure so that they can trash their water all they want.

Speaking of the ducks, the blasted Rouens have taken to wanting to sleep in the run, and refusing to go inside at night. So, since they're water-resistant, covered in down, and perfectly happy with the sleeping spot they've chosen, I'm letting them stay out there. That will be another advantage to their own secure enclosure - they can sleep anywhere they please.

It was rather delightfully quiet this morning. I only heard the Easter Egger sound off in the coop once while I was out filling feed and water bowls, and he's not particularly loud. Papa Captain Morgan is two years old and fully mature now and almost never crows unless he hears something he doesn't like. The girls are much happier now that they aren't being jumped at every turn, as the EE is a polite little guy, and the Captain is a gentleman and a scholar with them.

The temptation to do something with my fridge full of chicken-dinners-to-be is killing me! I can't wait to put one of those suckers into the Crock-Pot on Saturday with some vegetables and some good white wine and do him justice.

Eeeeeks!!! Turkey Vultures up the road stalking my neighbors DUCKS!! I guess as long as they've got big fat white ducks to keep them occupied they won't be bothering my little gals!!!! How do ya get rid of em!?!?

Where are you located? Wynantskill? That looks eerily like my next door neighbor's falling down barn which I noticed this morning being scoped out by turkey vultures... while they kept an eye on my ducks (which are indeed big fat white ducks).

Well, this picture was taken a few weeks ago- now they're almost fully feathered. I can't believe how much these guys eat- it's ridiculous. I'm going through bags of feed at an alarming rate. I find it hard to believe they were ever tiny!

Lynzi, someone on the other NY thread just posted about some silky pairs she has that she will be taking to an auction or chicken fair in CT soon. Her screen name is Stoopid, if you want to look it up.

They should look great. I just hate waiting a year before they start to look good.

Me too! Only prob is there's looking to be an awful lot of testosterone in this group of chicks

. Tiny little red combs everywhere.

I'm going to keep one banty roo as I think he will work out better in my coop with smaller LF girls than the gigantic ones I keep 'saddling' them with. :p And maybe one LF roo.. but the rest I hate to send off to be someone's dinner so I'll have to try and find homes once they grow up a bit.

I'll try and get pics this w/e.
