NY chicken lover!!!!

With all this negative talk of shipping experiences going on (sorry to hear about the $180 worth of birds. Ouch) I thought I would mention a very positive experience. I received an email from Murray McMurray hatchery Sunday morning at 5am saying my chicks had shipped, and at 9am received a call from the Albany postal service place that my chicks were there and they thought I might like to pick them up instead of waiting for them to get sent to my local post office

all 18 arrived healthy and are little balls of energy right now!
my experiences with mcmurray have all been good like that.

Well the babies went out in this beautiful DAY ..about 4-6 hours ..Boy Are they tired !
Brought them in ..They Almost went to sleep instantly ..

I cleaned out the coop today ..It needed it BAD !
I had one hen who has respiratory problems . ..liquid sounds breathing ...coughing ..
She is better today ..no coughing ..She is eating & drinking Normally
Not sure if it was three days of rain or the Ammonia in the coop ..
I cant seem to get it through my thick head they need Drafts ..I closed the coop the one night they were totally drenched ...
If she is still that way on Thur Im going to call the Vet ..for a antibiotic .
Anyone recommend any that is not toxic to eggs ..? and us ?

Hope everyone enjoyed the nice day !

STONY - Congrats ! thanks for GROSSING ME OUT !

jlaw & Gramma,

The laser video clips gave me a smile this morning -- I guess it triggers the hunting instinct in more than just cats and dogs. Too cute!

Congrats! Nice shot!
One of our favorite TSC employees just had her entire flock wiped out (35) by a weasel. She has 1 hen and 1 roo left, but neither are doing well. So sad.
BTW, what the heck is that string hanging from its forehead???
that is just a piece of weed stuck to brain matter

.

yeah weasels are killing machines. This is whyI cringe every time someone builds a hoop coop. Weasels fit through a 1 inch hole or less. Have a hoop coop or cattle panel coop without properly enforcing it you are just begging to have your flock wiped out over night. I know 2 people personally who have had this happen. I've warned people of the dangers on this thread many times. But you know how it is, no one will listen until it happens to them.

I've had chickens 9 years and weasels only 2 years.

jlaw, So glad your dd is doing so well! Sending healing thoughts!

I've ordered from Cackle hatchery and had great luck also. Will order next time locally, but if you're going to do hatchery, I recommend them.

Gramma,
Try a product called VetRX. I picked it up at TSC. It comes in a small box where they have chick electrolytes and such. I had a hen last week that I didn't think would make it through the night she was so bad. Gasping for air. I put some of this stuff on (after warming the bottle in warm water) her nostrils, a couple drops in her mouth, and rubbed some into her comb and wattles. Within 2 minutes she was 80% better, and by the next morning she was FINE. I was amazed. It's all natural too.
