NY chicken lover!!!!

huh what was that sorry was thinking of chickens.

I have never personally witnessed any of my other breeds eating them. They may and I just haven't seen it. Sumatra's are different in many ways than "normal" chickens.
I have to say, Sumatras are looking more and more interesting. What are their eggs like? Color? Size?
Try the "free" section of craigslist. I was just on a search for clean fill and there were a ton of ads for free pallets.
Also, look for the "mom and pop" medium sized companies. We have a commercial area behind our TSC that often has pallets sitting out next to the road. Just drive around commercial areas and look behind buildings.

Not only am I dealing with theft at our other property, I discovered a fraudulent charge on my debit card. After doing some research, I'm lucky to have only been charged what I was (the bank said I will get it back). I guess the thieves try a low amount first to see if it goes through and then go for the bigger amounts. The bank is investigating, but meanwhile my card was frozen. P.I.T.A.!

JLaw - I agree with the others in trying the "Free" section of Craigslist or just search Pallets in your area. I just came across this add this week...

But I just googled your location and see you're out near Buffalo. So maybe someone out there has some listed. But I definitely find typing what you're looking for in the search bar brings more results than searching for them yourself in the catergories.

**Also, not sure how much this would help you out, but I'm going to try something since I have a small flock and am now adding ducks, do you have any apple orchards close by? I contacted an orchard this week to see if they would be willing to part with any of their wooden apple bins. Someone just got back to me and gave the number to place to call to see how many they'd part with for a small fee. Not sure what that fee is, but I'll find out....

I'm thinking of making an appt for my daughter tomorrow to check out this bite from the tick I found on her last night. It didn't look engorged at all, but it was definitely holding onto her skin. She still has a a dot from the bite and some redness around it, smaller than a dime.

Might as well take her in, although generally the tick has to be engorged to give out the cooties. I pull ticks out of people all day at work and the docs usually throw them doxycycline "just in case". I had one, not engorged, and I just pulled it out and went about my day. What a great nurse I am, eh? :)

I'll call tomorrow and see if they want me to bring her in quick to check it out. The office is right near my son's school so I can bring her right before picking him up if they want me to bring her in. Thanks

I would definitely get it looked at.

I'm sure this question has come up on other threads, but I wanted to ask anyone who has ducks on this thread - Do you think it's ok to keep two orpingtons and three ducks (KCs) together in the same coop? Now that I'm getting more silkies I'm thinking I'll just stick to keeping the two coops I have seperated so the silkies can stay in one and the Orps in the other. But would it be ok to house the two orpington hens with the three ducks? Or should I really just get the ducks their own housing?
I think you will find that the ducks will make a mess of your coop & it will be wet a lot. At least that is what a lot of people say. Its better to keep the ducks separate. Ducks need to be able to dunk their heads in water every day. They splash it around & make a mess....You could put the water bucket outside in the summer, but in the winter?

This is what I keep reading...but the way my coops are set up, the chickens have open access to their runs. They can roam freely to their runs from the coops. So what I do is keep the water "outside" of the coop and in the run because it gets messy or filled with pine shavings anyway. It stays cleaner outside the coop. So if I moved the orps back to their own coop and moved the ducks in with them, the water would be kept outside in the run and they would have access to it, but outside of the coop. I guess I'll have the try and see. It sounds like those who have kept the two together had eventually moved them to their own pen because of the mess.

I'll definitely be bringing my daughter in tomorrow, this is starting to bother me now. Stupid ticks!

Didn't I give you eggs?

yes! I got some Marans, orps, and a few others from you but I also bought a dozen from Tricia and out some of my own in. I might possibly do another hatch I just don't want to spend money on any just to have them all fail. I have had two pip and start zipping today and they both died before finishing. I still see some rocking so I guess I will wait til there is no movement :/ I'm just disappointed. I would love a few marans chicks from you. A few pullets and a too would be good. Plus the lav. Pullet of course :) I will be bringing more manure soon.
My chickens favorite place to hang out is in the horse pasture digging through the poo. At least it gets all spread out then fertilizes the grass! Have a good night everyone, time to tuck in the horses and chickens for the night.
