In the 1.5 years I have been on this forum, I have never read about a broody dying while sitting on eggs. Anyone else have any experience with hens dying while brooding eggs?

in 5 plus years of dealing with several dozen broody's a year. No. Never. Has one sit THREE cycles before she hatched any. She was just fine and a great mother

OK......................... Broody question : I have an Australorp thats broody. I gave her eggs to sit on Sat. She hasn/t been off the nest to eat ,drink or poop. It's 4 days........ should I be concerned ??

Thanks for all the replies guys. She is in a large dog crate, in the coop so the other hens don't bother her. I just had a little bamntam cochin hatch some chicks. She left a BIG NASTY broody poop everyday for me to clean !!! The Aussies hasn't left any presents ..................yet ! That's why I was concerned.


Found out today she is VERY serious about her job ! OUCH !!!

Pearl, my white Silkie, was the same way. You could not do anything to her area or the chicks with out getting pecked! When I had to go near her I would do it in the evening and I placed a dish towel over her lightly so she wouldn't know what I was doing-candling eggs, cleaning the tub she was in, etc

The Khaki Campbells are now out in the coop, as they're big and feathered out, and they're getting too messy and stinky for the garage. The Rouens don't care - everyone is one happy duckeh family. I have five ducks and one drake, which I couldn't have managed if I had tried. So, I now have thirteen ducks, four males and nine females. The guys will be pleased.

The newbies ran around in formation in the run until it occurred to them that, hey! big water bowl! They spent the next hour playing in it and trying to eat everything. When night fell, I just scooped them up and dumped them into the coop, and penned them up in the playroom side. They're fine.

Tomorrow's chore is shoveling out the accumulated stinky ick and yuck in the run. I turned a lot of it over with a pitchfork, which has it smelling just heavenly out there at the moment. It won't take long to sort out, though - shovel it out to the bare dirt, put down some sweet PDZ, and we're good to go.

Within a couple hours of placing my ad on craigslist, I got a call from a nice woman. She had some "brown" ducks but wanted Pekins. I called my husband and let him know I was delivering the ducklings. He replied "WHY!??" I told him we could keep TWO or three. He insisted on at least three.
The lady had the nicest brooder box! And the cutest ducklings....
And we wound up trading.

I gave her three Pekins and she gave me two of her brown ducklings. I don't even know what breed they are. At least I'm down one duck.

that is just something to love about duckers. Newbies welcomed with open wings. No pecking order garbage. Just a "Hey, lets play".

If you don't know the genders, you might be happy to have five. I had a pair of pekin ducklings once that I picked up when I was left with one lone drake, hoping against hope that both were girls or both were boys. No dice. I had an even pair and that poor girl was so sexually harassed until I picked up some more females. The last thing you want is more males than females, ugh. If you had kept three, you might have ended up with my problem. Plus, who can resist cute little ducklings? And five are as easy to care for as three Don't mind me, I have morefowl disease and I try to spread it to everyone.
