NY chicken lover!!!!

I have to get off this website. I'm starting to think a couple dozen chickens would be a good idea, and that I *need* at least 12 more ducks.

This all started with me wanting enough chickens for eggs for my family.
What's 12 more when you already a dozen? If you can do it, then do it!

Did I mention that we are going to be grandparent one more time? DD is having #2.

This weather has been good to work outside. Lots to do every spring. I've got to stop with the expanding the garden and building more coops or bigger runs. I might get the garden completely surrounded and gates built. That will keep the chickens out of there but then there are the Berry bushes to surround. Ugh! I need about a million $$ worth of chicken wire and those green metal posts.
Congrats Grandpaw! Are actually able to stay grounded in all this wind?!?!? I swear if I go out there and open up my jacket I'm going riding the wind just like those turkey vultures out there! I have branches coming down. I feel like Dorothy over here, my house is about to take off any minute.

and they look........LAVENDER!

Hooray for you! They're adorable!

TOB
Thanks! I LOVE them! Couldn't be happier.

Lots of news. Had a hawk attack day before yesterday. Maybe the hawk was young, or maybe my shrieks put it off, but the hen it had down was ok and made its way to the coop when I got close enough to scare the bird off. Then it got a different hen, but she too is fine.

Reveille and two RIR girls have gone to their new home in a converted camper, and I hear they are fine.

So I'm in Chick mode! Got 4 silver laced Wyandotte chickies. But those delawares Rancher has sound nice. Do you have too many of them? And I'd love more Sussex, but there is the roo problem...oh dear. Tick eaters would be nice...
Glad the hawk didn't do any damage! Yayy for chickies!!! Do you have chicks for sale on CL right now? Someone in Pompey (I think) has a couple of listings up that I looked at, wasn't sure if it was you or not. I'm really contemplating getting another larger breed hen or two to go along with my orpingtons and help me out with my tick problem. Not sure what I would want but definitely something that I don't already have. I'd like to have a nice variety if I do get more.

I dont know what kind, but it was very tall standing over my barred rock hen. If she was scrunched to about six inches, it looked like it could have been 24. It was streaky on its breast, and it was cold grey/brown, not a warm brown like I saw in some pix. The second hen was a red one, I think the RIR.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for Tab and her eggs hatching.

I would love more SS, and will call, I think, but sexing them is a problem, and having two Roos didn't work out so well last time, although perhaps if they were older/younger that might work???I dunno, but it would be nice to be able to tell.

Very windy here too. I think the chickens will be very clean with the wind blowing every speck off them.

Well I went to TSC to get my chicks and they were all sold out. It appears they sold the last of them yesterday. I guess it is time to regroup again and wait to see what happens. Maybe we were not ment to start this year.

Tab - Sorry to hear about the power! I hope you don't lose all those eggs!

Last night I went out at 8 to close up the coops and I saw what I'm about 95% sure was a raccoon making it's way up the mountain, I'm assuming it was heading to the creek to get water. It was moving too slow to be a cat. Then this morning around 11am when I was heading up the road to pick up the chicks I saw something in the distance cross the street into someone's yard, thought it was a groundhog but as I got closer and looked into the yard it was another raccoon!! Didn't have much of a tail left so I'm wondering if something got to it and thats why it was out during the day??

I am not in the mood to start dealing with these things again, but I do have to say, leaving our porch light on all night, the light over our sink that shines light thru the window into the backyard definitely helped last year! Guess we'll see if that keeps them away this summer as well.
I have killed raccoons 4 hours before sundown and 4 hours after sunrise. Always young ones.

Country Max is getting their chicks in stock now. New batch every week for the next 3-4 weeks.

We've been without internet since sunday. I am able to get on my nook at the neighbors. Hopefully time warner will be out to fix it. I'll have to catch up when it comes back on. Lost power yesterday,, someone hit a pole near us. It was out for a few hours and we may lose 90 eggs we had in the bator. Arg! not been the best week.
Don't give up on the eggs...they are pretty resilient. A few hours will just delay the hatch.

OMG! did you get them? I can and wish I'd get such a find. I'll trade you chicks for them. How many you want?

No chicks for now. I have 17 at the moment. I'm waiting to see who ends up being Roo's (who I'll have to find homes for or make food out of) and then see how many more I can fit in this coop I'm building.

I've modified the floor plan to be slightly smaller than 6ft by 10ft by 6ish feet tall (it's a shed conversion) so chicken math says I can have about 15 chickens in there. I have 4 barred rocks that I'm going to get pictures of for gender opinions but the 7 EE I have I think I need to wait for gender on. Also the Silkie is likely a Roo, as is the Cochin. I'm pretty sure the 2 leghorns and the 2 red stars are girls but i have my doubts the way everyone is squabbling at times.

However the jars aren't going anywhere except the two really large ones that I'm making feeders out of, so I may take you up on the offer in the future if it'd still be there.

Ok, will have to try there. Thanks

Waterloo aint that far from me. I got eggs in the bator and eggs under broody's.

In the bator are 4 Del, 1 Col. R. , 7 maran, 14 EE, 2 orp and 10 unmarked. EE's may be black or Lavender, I think. Mother EE / Father Lav Amer. though some mothers are the Lavs Daughter and they're black hens.

TOB how' s that coop coming.

Now before I forget , to get Olive eggers I need to put my EE's with the Marans rooster? Since I have 4 Black and the BM hens are black I think I can stick a couple of girls in with the BM's and no one will notice. Though I will say they took to the Sussex hen okay.

Since the Sussex is the only hen in there that lays a light brown egg I know not to hatch hers. She was a good broody last year though.
