NY chicken lover!!!!

My dog tried to warn us by barking her fool head off, but we figured she was just running her mouth about deer, so we told her to shut up.  I guess we should have listened!

Sorry about that, that's terrible...we've had bears around a few times and every time the dogs bark their heads off and we ignore them, assuming they are barking at deer...you would think we'd learn.

So that egg I put under my broody hatched and I have an adorable little sebright chick now :) she only has the one though which makes me sad but oh well...hopefully the little thing survives. The broody is low on the pecking order and a first time mom so I hope she can protect it.

I hope she can too! Hope it does alright by itself!!

Oh my Hen!!!! What a nightmare. I'm so sorry! I don't know what I'd do if I ever saw a bear in my backyard. I understand they're starting to pop up in more and more places but still. Do you think he'll continue to come back knowing now what you have in your yard??

It turns out that she's a sow with at least one cub. It's difficult to hate on a mama feeding her babies, although I'm not pleased. We have a nuc coming from Betterbee, and I just ordered a package of Italians, so we'll have new bees shortly. Still, poor bees.

Just catching up from last night, and am distressed by the fate of the bees. Poor things. It seems an unfair match, a bear against a hive of bees. And a hard one to intervene against as a human protector. Well, now the insurance claim has gone up, and you can build the fort Knox for Bees, and you wont be out the deductible for the second and third destructions...good luck. But be careful if the bear is around lurking.

The adjustor came today and was great. Allstate is paying to replace the bee deck and both hives, which is awesome of them. It helped that the adjustor is a bee guy!

I need a game cam - I'd like to see this beast.

Hi Heni,

True, there are no "good" or "bad" animals. They are just doing what they do. But that doesn't make it any easier to take and I'm sorry for the losses and damages you took on. I guess the problem here is that Mama has learned there are some tasty and easy-access vittles in your yard. You do need to be careful, between that and the fact that it's a mother and cub combo! I recall hearing that there needs to be a very unpleasant connection for the bear when it comes close to people or our yards. Maybe keep an air horn or something of similar shock value, and if you get lucky enough to catch the bears free loading again, let 'er rip. Just an idea, but be safe. Worst thing is to get caught between mama and cub.

Yep - fun fun! The bee deck was spectacular and great protection - unfortunately, when it came to a battle between the deck and a fifty-foot-tall pine tree in December (12/21, as a matter of fact), the tree won handily. It's all getting rebuilt, and hot wired this time. Bears are pretty bright, and make the association between unpleasantness and food sources pretty rapidly. We're actually putting plenty of hot pepper on the remnants of the hive this evening, as it's harmless yet sufficiently annoying that she should back off. We'll see.

Our next door neighbors are out running a hot wire around their rabbit hutches. She breeds lionhead rabbits, and has a whole bunch of kits right now. If that bear got wind of them, she'd just stand there opening hutch doors like she was grazing in the fridge.

I may just make a trip to Wally World this evening to get a game cam.

The bloody bear came back and finished the job. Poor bees. I'd like a bearskin rug right now.

Sorry.

I do hope you get the hot wire BEFORE the new bees come in.
