Rancher you better watch out otherwise you'll get invaded some day.

It depends on the family. I've heard the black skinned chickens like the silkie are specialties in certain asian cultures. Kinda like some cultures eat rat. Imagine picking out your own rat for fried rat on a stick.

This is where my husband's culinary skills come in and he always asks "When are you gonna let me cook up one of those silkies?" LOL Ummm Never!

Those must be some sad Orpingtons.
I like to think they were "in training"

Quote: I agree with Rancher about raising it up off the ground. I would also put the floor on hinges, that way you can just unhook one side, let it down & push the shavinngs off. Then raise it up again and rake out the shavings. So much easier than having to go inside & shovel the shavings out the door into a wheel barrel. plus a raised coop gives the chickens a place to get in the shade..

JLawson, 4 of my 9 coops are low like yours. I prefer it as chickens can't hide under it and there is absolutely no difference in moisture those 4 and the other 5 coops. Those are my results and my .02

Here are some pictures of the polycarbonate roofing I used that has held up beautifully to all sorts of rain, snow, and ice. Got it from Home Depot (palram). So lightweight and easy to work with. It is 2-foot wide and comes in 8 and 12 foot lengths in several colors. I used the gray sunblock with a strip of clear in the middle for a skylight. In my 60s with no carpentry experience and built this coop myself, so easy to handle and install.

Also, here is a picture of the run on the larger coop. Landscape ties (cheap) for posts with 2x4 stringers to tie it together. Yard fence on the outside and top with chicken wire on the inside to keep the birds far enough away to prevent grabbing from the outside. Has deterred everything so far and we have all sorts of predators lurking about.

And I always wanted a cucmber trellis!

a pic of when I 1st got my RIR's . You can see the coop pretty well. I still house them in the same trailer coop, just no run at all. The plastic is still in great shape 9 or 10 years later. And I got the plastic 2nd hand.

Evening all! Long work week doesnt leave a whole lot of time for other things. Finally caught up on all the reading.

Rancher--some day you are going to get jumped by a gang of silkies for all your bluster! I am picturing a man covered in silkies head to toe and his prized barred rocks and cr and everyone else walking out in disgust! hehe

Stony---love where you went with my marker. It was my first thought as well.

Horsekeeper--nice coop!

Yes, I am the one who uses pine needles in my runs. I bag them in the fall when they are dry and use them all winter long in the runs. I know other people have used them in their nest boxes. I like them for winter as it gets the birds off the snow and it keeps them busy looking for any goodies that might be in them. i do use them any time they are available regardless of the season in the runs because I like free natural stuff!

So according to a much more knowledgeable person than I on heritage breed rir''s, it seems I have at least two boys and one girl. The unknown is showing girl tendancies. I am soooooo hoping its a girl. These babies are the cutest and nosiest little critters. Constantly watching what I am doing and wanting to be wherever I am. The terrorists seem to be more accepting of them as time is going on. Hoping that stays that way.

Okay...off to bed as work beckons again tomorrow. Ta for now
