I agree with Rancher about raising it up off the ground. I would also put the floor on hinges, that way you can just unhook one side, let it down & push the shavinngs off. Then raise it up again and rake out the shavings. So much easier than having to go inside & shovel the shavings out the door into a wheel barrel. plus a raised coop gives the chickens a place to get in the shade..
JLawson, 4 of my 9 coops are low like yours. I prefer it as chickens can't hide under it and there is absolutely no difference in moisture those 4 and the other 5 coops. Those are my results and my .02
Go here to see a bunch of naked dead Silkies Customs took from someone coming in from the Far east....ugh.

How many eggs do you have under hens right now? If you have more than a couple split them up between the broody hens so they each get to hatch one or two chicks....break their brood sooner and you still wind up with the same number of chicks.I can't take these broodies. I think I have a RIR hens that is broody now too.![]()

Totally GROSS SILKIES !
Are all your babies spoken for ?
It seems Cass wont end up with a 100 ...
I got 7 chicks from the first round of hatching at the Grade School. It looks like 5- 6 of them are Sumantras. I love those birds, just wish they laid a slightly larger egg.
My neighbor had the same number of her eggs hatch, so I suspect that it was the people taking care of the eggs, not the actual eggs themselves. She is delighted because she only wants a few more hens and the roosters come visit me for their appointment with the freezer camp bus.
One of the girls in the class wanted 3 of the chicks. She tied an orange yarn around her favorite one. So cute of her. Of course she wanted 3 of the "black ones". So I would have had10 chicks but I am letting her have 3 of them. I hope the second round of chicks is a greater percentage of hatching because it seems I have promised more birds than I have hatching. (Don't tell ray, but I just put 5 more eggs under a broody down in the coop, I can always advertise on CL to get rid of any that people back out on, right?)
So the second batch should start hatching Tuesday. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that I get the 50% hatch rate I expected so I get another 10 - 15 chicks.
