Finally, some pic's of my new girls.

The birds from Rancher are older and a good bit larger (for now!) than those I got from Marquisella. For now, they are separated: the small ones are in a dog cage, which I'm able to move from coop to outside and back again. The older "kids" have the run of the coop, and I bit the bullet today and moved their temporary pen right outside the auto-chicken door. I was worried how they'd handle the noise and activity while we continued work on the pen, but they did fine. They even figured out how to come back up the ladder and into the coop at bedtime all on their own (I had to catch them one by one to put them out the "hatch") !!

I love seeing everyone's photo's (Lynzi, the duckling is off-the-cute-chart adorable, as are Stony's broodies and babes)....and I hope you like these.... my long-awaited chickies!

Here are the Coronation Sussex ("Cracker) & Lavender Orpington ("Chumley)...names compliments of my sons.

They are both from Marquisella and are so much fun.

I have been getting eggs to classrooms also. 50% hatch in a classroom is great. Just had someone bring back 3 chicks out of 3 dozen eggs. I had 17 chicks hatch out of 23 eggs THE SAME DAY!! Argh. I try to have hatches all spring so I know that the eggs are viable.

They hatched 8 chicks out of 48 eggs. I am getting 50% hatch rates under broodies at home...so I know that at least 50% are viable. That would be 24 chicks. Each. From 2 schools. Instead I got 15 chicks total combined from both schools. NOT amused.

(and I handpicked the eggs I gave them...they had a greater percentage of known fertile eggs because I picked the ones I knew were fertile for their hatch. At home I grab a marker, grab a handful of eggs and throw them under the darn broody hen)

My son is working tomorrow ..so no trip .
if he has to work next fri & sat would a monday after work be okay ? or another day ..
Im pretty sure a Sunday would not work for us .

Speaking of school hatches, we gave eggs to a school last year and lent them our turner also. We had quite a few chicks come back even after some went home with a couple students.

Morning All,
Woke up to one of my Silkie chicks crowing this morning! Their grow out pen is right next to the Silkie coop and Duncan was crowing away. I guess one of them wanted to join in. Now to figure out which one it is. I have a video of Duncan crowing that I'm going to try to play later and see if he starts up again.
