NY chicken lover!!!!

I start some of my own plants but buy some too. I like to buy the Heirloom tomatoes for others. It's less trouble to buy a couple of heirloom that struggle to start them my self.

RIP my little Beatrice. She had been living in a crate in my den for awhile, she hadn't been well and really I should have put her down long ago...luckily she passed away in her sleep last night before I had to make the decision. She was my favorite though she was always cuddly and would follow me around the yard

My red & white potatoes are growing wonderfully, sunflowers about 4 inches tall & pumpkins have self planted themselves (I had over 100 from pumpkin seeds fed to the hens over the winter) and the onions are starting to peak out. Beets, turnips, and lettuce are also starting to grow. Hoping no freezes over the weekend

Morning All,
Woke up to one of my Silkie chicks crowing this morning! Their grow out pen is right next to the Silkie coop and Duncan was crowing away. I guess one of them wanted to join in. Now to figure out which one it is. I have a video of Duncan crowing that I'm going to try to play later and see if he starts up again.

that's cool last Saturday I woke up to my female silkies um basically trying to crow at 6 am, I thought they were being attacked but no they're just trying to wake us up so we come see them. I hope I didn't make the neighbors mad we live in a city lol

LOL! I have to say, I haven't even had these ducklings 24hrs and they are winning me over!!! They're almost more "cuddly" than chicks when you hold them. They're so sweet!

Speaking of school hatches, we gave eggs to a school last year and lent them our turner also. We had quite a few chicks come back even after some went home with a couple students.

The trick to their success was your loaning them the turner. I don't have a 'bator, which is why I was so excited to give the school eggs to hatch. But they didn't want to come in and turn on weekends so very low hatch rate. I would have been further ahead if I had sold the 8 dozen eggs as eating eggs and bought chicks or gas to go get chicks from Rancher. (all without the stressful waiting for the hatching to happen)

Thanks Sadly no...she actually never laid an egg and was almost a year old. That probably should have been my first clue that something was up. I took her out of the main coop a few months ago because she was beaten up by the rest of the flock (hence the bald head). She just hadn't been the same since. She was living with my outcast roo for awhile. He's all depressed now. At least he has the 2 silkies I got from Lynzi's to keep him company.

Haha sometimes I find my hens louder than the roo's. I will be going to work sometimes at 5:30am and the hens are being so obnoxious that you would think they are being attacked...ugh good thing we don't have any neighbors (well neighbors that care). We only have one neighbor close to us and we just give them a dozen eggs a week and that keeps them happy. I couldn't imagine living in the city...

Well Of my eleven assorted bantams from TSC I think 5 are roos. So anyone want some roos? I have 3 white ones one with some light feathers on feet. And the other two maybe 3 seem to be oeg's. And to top it off the 2 of the 3 bantam cochins the lady said look like hens have red waddles coming in. So i may have more roos there but have to see if we keep those or not. If interested in the white banties or the oeg looking banties just send me a pm. I can take pics and send them just don't want to flood the ny thread. These will be free, and I'll drive a bit to drop them off if needed.

The Trinity Church in Fayetteville had it's annual plant sale today. Lots of perennials cheap. The bleeding hearts went fast, but I got some Forget me nots, and lily of the valleys and a bunch others to try out.

They had hostas, cone flowers and some lilac, burning bush and other shrubs too. Plus a bake sale. Just lots of stuff. I buy the cheaper $1 and $2 sizes but there are bigger pots. Stuff people divided from their yards.

Since it's annual and there are lots of stuff it might be worth the trip for some folks.
