NY chicken lover!!!!

Great shot, Stony !! Do you a .22 or a pump B.B. gun ?? Need to come get a few lessons !

Ok, I've been away to PA. for a dog show and have been trying to catch up on all the posta. I'm confused, it looks like several people here are having get- together ?? Are there any definite dates & locations yet ? Would like to come ................. if, I'm not at a dog show

for a few of the weasels I used a pump pellet gun. Anything larger than a weasel gets the .22 or larger caliber. All a pump bb gun will do to a possom is ...well nothing. A pellet gun on a possum, MIGHT I stress MIGHT mortally wound it. You need the right tool for the job at hand.

Nothing definite yet on a gathering. Sonew is having a chickenstock at her house this year. That is a definite, but not this thread's gathering. (I am sure it will be a great time however. If she is close to you it would be worth going to. The Sharkie chickenstocks are reported to be wonderful gatherings)

We are still trying to get a gathering going for those of us on this thread. (Hoping some go to Sonew's chickenstock and brings back ideas for us to use. (I got a lot of my ideas from reading threads about other gatherings in the past)

When we finally have a host/ess I will put a link to the thread regarding the gathering in my signature line. A bunch of us did that last 2 years so everyone could find the new thread and the information was all gathered in one thread for newbies who wanted to attend. (Sure saved a lot of reading/scanning time if you didn't read this thread for a few days. We sure are a chatty bunch, so separate thread for gathering seems to work quite well)

Ugh, just had my one pretty blue NN pullet die on me after laying her first egg. Saw her in the nest box - she managed to get out a tiny little egg, next thing I know she's standing in the yard bleeding. Took her in and she had a prolapse, but not a particularly bad one or so it seemed. Had stopped bleeding, no obvious wounds.. but alas, she didn't make it. Don't think I should do these january hatch birds anymore - seems they are less hardy, possibly due to being hatched 'off season' - or maybe it's just the NN's. Who knows. /sniff. Just two Jan 1 hatched NN's left - I hope they manage to get out an egg without prolapsing.

ON the positive side, I never managed to plant anything in my garden, so nothing to cover tonight. :)

Ohhh noooo.... So sad, what can ya really do in those situations?? I'm sorry for your loss. Hope the frost kills the weeds in the garden area!! I wanna plant soon too!! Ha

Well, my Ipad is being stupid, and I missed about a day, and had lots to read by the time I got to the big clunky computer. (but reliable, sort of)

Still chewing on the biosecurity. When I went last year to Tab and Travis's I was conscious of not bringing any of our unique germs with us. So, I took care of my chickens in the morning, had a bath and put on clean clothes and shoes that had been washed. I have some plastic sandals that can be washed very thoroughly, and they don't even look that tacky. I'd probably wear them anyway. THen I hopped in the car and drove. when I got home I did all those things again. I promise to do the same wherever we gather this year. It wasnt hard.

I am sorry for your loss. Not sure about the off season thing. Not sure what makes a bird prone to prolapse. Though I don't encourage extra large eggs. A large sized egg is plenty for anyone.

How old was your girl?

My CR's mature late, BM's early. As a rule everyone stays on grower until that first egg. Some layers are 16% and some 21% .

Seems I wasted my money on this plant. Bloodroot. It's poisonous and can't risk the chickens eating it. Rhubarb leaves are poisonous too , but so far they haven't eaten much. I've covered the plants with milk crates.

Darn and it is so pretty. They ate my bleeding hearts without dyeing, which is why I didn't buy any.

she was born Jan 1, so 5.5 months or so. Pretty sure it was her first egg -- and it was itty bitty at that. No clue what happened there. I have only had one other minor prolapse and that one recovered. not sure if the other hens had pecked at it - NN might be more prone to that sort of thing with a bare rear. Going to try and hatch more replacement NN's soon with luck.

Wishing you luck on hatching replacements. Sad when they die before they have paid you back for the feed they ate while growing up.
