NY chicken lover!!!!

I don't get updates, I just go by the little red icon on the thread title when I come to the site or if on my phone the star next to my subscriptions will be blue.

Finished the duck house (well sort of) I'm going to get another crate to expand the run part. It's not really that big when the door to the coop is down. It's fine for the ducklings for now but once they're bigger one of them will always have to be on the door. It's either that or I take the door completely off and let them have their choice of sleeping in the run or coop at night?! I have latches connecting the run to the coop so I cannot seperate. I don't think anything is getting in there with how well the wiring is fixed on there. Only predators we have around here have been raccoons and we haven't had any since we started leaving the porch light on at night.

Great job it's turning out nice!

I see the dog and chickens are enjoying their duck TV!

FYI, new BM chick today. Del gone broody. Not sure how many eggs she's on. That makes a total of five broody hens. Moved a BR out of the nest box to a make shift nest in the corner of the coop, so that leaves two hens in the one box. Will need to do more.
What are you feeding your chickens? Seems you get a new broody every other day. I think your hens see other hens with chicks and want some. Like my wife sees other babies and wants another. I just point to the chicken coop and tell her to go pick her baby up. Only problem is she loves the roo and wants to hold him wich i hear is a no no. So I'm guessing she's probaly holding him while i'm at work.

I call this pic .
.Dont Coop me UP ...
when I havent closed the coop yet ...they roost on the hinge of the door ..
Our roo always faces in ....Girls face in or out ...

I am putting the Big ones to bed 1st

Heres the new babies waiting to go to bed ..& watching the Goings on ..LOL..

Whats wrong with holding a roo ? I hold all my chicks .
I wish someone held my roo when he was younger .. he grew up not being touched & he doesnt like us to get near him .
From what I'm being told is this

"That is a nice cockerel. However, I do not recommend holding them and trying to make pets of them. They tend to lose their fear of people and can eventually end up attacking."
and someone else

"
I was planning to say just this. I think I respond to at least three threads a week from people who make pets of cockerels, and then are surprised when they reach maturity and start attacking people. You have kids, so I think it's doubly important to maintain an Alpha relationship with this boy. No holding, no cuddles, no hand-feeding and absolutely don't let him on your shoulder. You're telling him in chicken language that he's the boss right now, so when he decides to assert his rights or thinks you need put back in your place, he'll attack.

The best case scenario is that he respects you, which means that he's not stressed when you're around and comes running when you are feeding treats, but he moves away from you when you walk towards him and doesn't want you to touch him. Luckily, the best way to achieve this is to simply leave him alone and save your affection for the hens. "

Those are why wife don't hold him now.

Good morning all. The chickens are well though our one silkie gets along with the two older chickens but the thirteen week old girls don't get along. So since I've introduced her to the chicks and they get along I'm going to pen her off with them hopefully she will be happier, until August when we get another coop. Our setup is plenty big but I want make sure she is happy. Off to work I hope I have super hard cats and dogs too groom so I don't have to hear peoples petty problems! Hope everyone has a great day!

Rancher, good luck with your broody girls!
