NY chicken lover!!!!

Salt

What are you feeding your chickens? Seems you get a new broody every other day. I think your hens see other hens with chicks and want some. Like my wife sees other babies and wants another. I just point to the chicken coop and tell her to go pick her baby up. Only problem is she loves the roo and wants to hold him wich i hear is a no no. So I'm guessing she's probaly holding him while i'm at work.
mine eat bugs, frogs, snakes etc mainly. Currently have 11 broody's.

Whats wrong with holding a roo ? I hold all my chicks .
I wish someone held my roo when he was younger .. he grew up not being touched & he doesnt like us to get near him .
I never hold chickens unless I need to tend to a wound or something. I have 6 and 7 year old birds I have never touched. Roosters follow me, I walk right by them, they come in my work shop with me

. Friendly as can be. I have only ever had 2 mean roosters. Ate them before they could make more mean roosters.

Same here. Kinda. I have only had ONE mean rooster. He may have been held as a baby, no way of knowing. One of his hatch mates is my Alpha roo right now. I don't think that holding or not holding makes for a mean roo. I think it's genetic. Eat the mean ones, breed the docile ones, then you will have a docile flock, in general. (Hens can be mean too so you don't want an aggressive rooster in your flock so you are breeding aggressiveness into both genders)

Morning all. This humidity is really getting to me. I am hoping it breaks soon. It was as humid inside at work as it was outside yesterday. You could have just mopped me up.

Rancher--the recipe is a cup of hot water, 2 tablespoons of honey(I am going to get some raw) and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Drink that once a day. Its supposed to relieve or eliminate arthritis pain. Takes a couple of weeks to kick in but studies in europe show it does work. I am trying it. Oh--I did put de in their coop but this time I used the permethryn powder. I think the girls picked up the mites somewhere other than the coop. I used the perm spray on it when I cleaned it out and nothing could survive that. I almost killed myself using the spray! Anyways, they look better and the ivermectin has kicked in cause it always gives them the biggest, nastiest poops. They look much chipper this morning.

Love the duckeh coop! very nice job!

Jlaw--I made that mistake with my first silkie roo Mumbles. I held him a lot and spoiled him. When he matured he went after everyone, including me. I found someone to take him and he learned to be nice in their yard after the other roos gave him whatfor. My next roosters were not held nor spoiled. They are gentlemen and allow me to handle them without complaint when I need to inspect them, etc. My large fowl roo Olaf was also raised hands off and he minds his manners for the most part. I do have to remind him every once in a while who the most supreme ruler is when he challenges me. All the other mean ones went to freezer camp or crock pot hot tub. I have some youngsters now who are also being raised hands off unless I am moving them from coop to pen. I think hands off is best when it comes to roos.

My one day off today so I shall see about a hair cut and then some groceries. Might see if there is any watermelon on sale. If there is , I will get the cheeps some as a nice treat. It will help cool them off and give them water. Stay cool everyone.

Well my "experiment" with the duck pool worked!!!
yesss.gif
My husband bought me a new hose yesterday while he was at Sam's Club so I decided to cut two short pieces off the one I had and see if I can get the small amount of water that trickles down the side of out yard, into the pool and it worked!! The pool was completely filled this morning. So now I just need to cut a hole just big enough for the hose to fit thru, and another one for another piece to drain back into the woods where the water was going, level out the pool somehow, and it'll be all set for the ducks when we start letting them out to free range!!

I'd have to see them side by side but I suspect they'd be just fine in the yard. I say put the younger ones on the roost at night in the dark and see what happens.

Last night I put Jackson on the roost next to Jack and this am there they were fine as frog hair. Jackson is the BM rooster youngster I'm keeping. Jack is his dad.

Try them out in the yard together and watch them. You can tell if they're beating up the others or whether they're just working out the order.

Hi Rancher,

they are side by side in the coop late day / evenings, separated by the portable pen fencing. I have the coop kind of split 2/3 for the big girls, and 1/3 for the small ones. It's not an optimal situation, but I'm doing the best I can. They are all growing fast, so hopefully it won't be too long 'til I can mingle them under supervision. I'm thinking of starting this next step some time next week. Will keep you posted.

Thanks for the advice.

Lazy birds sun bathing in my construction zone....

Cute! I've got a construction zone of my own, Lynzi! Can't wait 'til it's all cleaned up, but things are still a work in progress, though functioning. I noticed my chickens lying almost on their side in the sun, and at first I got scared, but realized they're just lounging. LOL!

I was too when I saw them doing it for the first time last year. This year they do it almost too often, kinda like those fainting goats? Fainting Chickens?!? LOL My son went out there one day and he comes running back inside, "MOM!!! I Think one of your chickens died!!!!" I was like WHAT?!? I looked out there and told him Oh no, she's just sunbathing. LOL

The thunderstorm knocked a tree in my neighbors yard over across the road and onto the power lines last night. Hence no power and I hide upstairs with an air conditioner to sleep because of my odd work hours. The heat and humidity were aweful. Last week we had trouble with keeping the LG's temp steady with the odd changes in weather even with the fan DH installed. The temp had spiked and I think the eggs were cooked. Not a single one hatched. Miss E one of my first birds that we've had for the past 3 yrs and got as an adult was dead when I got down to the barn for chores. Tonight is the closing preK program at 6:30 so that means maybe 5 hrs of sleep if I'm lucky. I can't wait for the weekend.

I've been miserable uncomfortable, so I can imagine your discomfort would be even worse. Also spotty power outages here over the past couple of days. Most annoying. Much cooler weather coming. Hang in there!

I'm sorry to hear about the unexpected death of your "Miss E" ... it seems this happens occasionally, where one goes out to the coop and discovers a sudden death. I'm not looking forward to those times. Again, sorry to hear.

Interesting discussion on the pros and cons of handling a roo from babyhood. Never thought about that, and not having roosters, I'm glad I don't have that dilemma!

I have noticed my alpha girl, Helen (the Marans) roosting on TOP of two of the others. Like riding water skis. Seriously. They don't seem to care, except when she's first getting herself aboard.

Should I just leave her be? I haven't removed her yet, but I do feel kind of bad for the other subordinate girls. Especially in the heat last night.

Sorry for all the multiple posts, but I'm catching up on 2 days' worth of posts. Crazy days and power outages have put me way behind!

Have a good day everyone!

PS: Breela, that was a wicked video of that ominous cloud. Like Cass said, when you see green in the clouds, it's usually a darned good indicator of serious weather. Your video reminded me of a tornado incident we had in Canada (my cottage) about 7 or 8 years ago. Sky looked just like that, only this time it DID form a tornado. It did a lot of damage to the north shore of the lake, where we have our place. Trees were uprooted, smashed and twisted like match sticks.
