NY chicken lover!!!!

Well after 2 hours of sleep wife wakes me up in a panic that the coop is wet. Guess the one window I wasn't worried about let in more rain than I wanted roosts was wet and the ground under was wet. Took DE to it all then went and got my spare bag of shaveings dumped them all over went. I mixed it all up and it wasn't as wet as I thought only part of floor that was wet at all was under food where it was scraped to bare floor. Hammered some wood over the window for now. Looks like I got some work to do this weekend. Been meaning to do some shutters or old style window coverings like my mother inlaws house has but been picking up too much over time to do anything with chickens this past week and half.

well back to bed

That reminds me the windows on the coop are open. I wasn't worried about the temps as they aren't that low. It's to late now to fret over it. It does need cleaning though and I did just buy a new bag of DE.

I hope your birds are okay. You got pics of those windows?

Morning All,
We had quite the drop in temperature last night. Had the AC on upstairs for the kids and in our bedroom, woke up this morning and it was colder in my kitchen/living room than it was in the bedrooms with the AC on! Got worried about the ducklings since they've been in their coop without a heat lamp, they seem to be doing just fine.

Stony great pics (as always

Glad to hear of everyone's hatches! I think I'm going to try making my own incubator and see if I can hatch out some of these silkie eggs. My son has been wanting to do an "experiment" and this will be one indeed! LOL

Turned the heat light on the chicks last night and closed the window, which I've been leaving open.

You don't have a Silky hen that is broody? They're sneaky I tell you. They're reading your mind and know you want them to, so they won't go broody. You need to think the other way and then they'll all go broody. They are evil evil birds.

I do have one I got from Marquisella that just sits around all day, but she's not sitting on eggs, nor is she laying, nor does she stay in one spot. She'll lay up in the coop, down in the run, on the ladder. She's an odd duck that one! LOL I think I'll place the eggs in one of the nestboxes of that coop and see if at least one of them will sit on them.

Soooo cute! I hope I can get my broody to hatch some. I just lost a hen last night

I went out to close up the coop, had a look around and one of my red sexlinks was dead under the coop...I have NO idea what happened. I looked over over and there were no visible signs of injury, just a bunch of feathers scattered around. I think she got into it with the roo and maybe broke her neck? She was very healthy otherwise (at least visibly) and she was acting fine....ugh what do you guys do with the bodies of your birds?
Sorry to hear about your hen.

Thats so odd. When I found one of my white silkies injured out in the yard last summer I buried him in the woods when he didn't end up making it thru the afternoon.

Get some wooden eggs and see if that will inspire her.

AQHA - I am sorry for your loss.

I would but I don't have a vehicle at the moment. My husband was giving tractor rides on the new john deer with the kids the other night and a rock flew up and hit his driver side window. I've been without a car for two days now since he is driving mine. I'm nervous about driving that car until the window is fixed. I think the only thing holding the shattered glass in place is the tint. They're suposed to be out today to fix it. Hopefully sooner than later so I can pick up my son from school and my husband doesn't have to leave work to come out all way back home and back out to the restaurant.

I just wanted to stop on by and check on all my fellow NY chicken crazy people.
I have met a few great people from all around here and some offline too. They have been very kind and let me look at the setups and chickens they have and all. I must say Thank you to everyone for being so wonderful.
I think NY chicken lovers are the best.

Well this story hits close to home...The town is trying to tell this family that they can't have chickens on their residential property. How exactly is it a financial gain to raise your own eggs?! It cost more!
Anyone else run into this? We are a small, very under populated area. On top of the fact that our entire county is zoned agricultural...I'll stop ranting.

Chickens seemed fine some alittle wet. I don't have pics of windows but the one that I wasn't really worried about was on back wall of coop. Roof over hangs like 12 or 18 inch I cant remember and the window is 8ft wide and 2 feet high. back wall is like 6 ft and I only put one piece of 4x8 plywood on that one part. i'll get picks this weeknd.

The town may have different zoning but either way, nothing worth having comes without a fight. They may have to fight it showing the entire county is zoned agricultural.
