I've always wondered because usually we bury them, a few have gone to the dump...this one I drove down the road a bit and put it in the woods. Maybe not the best idea but I hate to see a bird go to waste.
You might be violating a few Encon regs by leaving a dead animal in the woods. If you don't want it to go to waste, take it to the dump out of the plastic bag. All kinds of scavengers will find it and eat it there. You have to bury something 6 feet deep to keep animals from finding it....dumps/landfills do not put near that much dirt on the pile in a year, much less each day, so something will find it and eat it.

Lynzi---you still have bugs at your house???  My chickens ate everything.  If I see a bug, it must have just arrived because this acre has been stripmined by my 41 chickens.  If it moves, it gets eaten.  My biggest fear is falling asleep in my lawnchair because I wouldnt put it past them to eat me!

We have a lot of flying bugs! Especially flies that I can't stand. My son has been on the hunt for caterpillars lately. Found some on my apple trees so I encouraged him to keep looking there! Lots of bees and wasps, need to spray again. I found a hornet starting a nest in one of my rabbit hutches this week. Knocked that thing right outta there. I'm sure it'll start over again. My kids are terrified of the bees, as soon as they see one they're back in the house. It's going to be a very long summer!

I guess I assumed he would fight it to protect his girls.
We might have to go with the leg traps, but I still think it's inhumane. I'd rather do snares and have the fox die quickly.
I wish I had the time. I'd sit all day with a .22 and wait for it. I've never hunted, but I think I could shoot a chicken threat. lol
I'll be sitting out there with you tomorrow with my .22. Something took 6 chickens today. Found 4 different feather pile all over the yard...Buddy's feathers included.

I know thats the price of letting them free range. Four 2.5 month olds and two adults.

Sorry for your losses. I hope a 22 will take whatever is killing your birds out. Do you have something bigger? If it's a fox or coyote you might need a larger caliber.

.22 is perfect for fox. Works on yotes as well. 22 mag is better on the yote's but the .22 will work in the chest or the head.

if all else fails shotgun.

read the story. Sucks yes. BUT if the town is solely zoned residential and there is not a chicken ordinance, sorry to say it but ....... the town has a right.
Raising chickens to eat for personal consumption isn't farming, it is homesteading. But none the less, they have a fight with zoning.
My entire town is zoned AG and light commercial. My town supervisor who has been a lifelong friend is a farmer and encourages everyone in town to farm to one extent or another.

Sucks for these people. The rats thing is a bunch of garbage. I wish them the best

I completely agree, when I was looking for a house I started off in Greece but then found that I could not do this, that, or chickens. So I set my eyes back from the suburbs to the city which will allow a lot of things and oddly enough I found a house with a large backyard for an awesome price. Now I did have some work to do in the backyard the biggest expense is the privacy fence, but completely worth it! So yes ideally I would be homestead well hopefully in a few years LOL! But I'm still learning.

Evening all. What a day at work. It turned out to be just me all day due to my supervisor having a death in his family. I cant really say where I was working (not the pharm, thats tomorrow) but the logo is a siren. Anyways, just me, on a friday, on a holiday weekend. To say that I was busy is an understatement. All I can say is idiots.

I guess its time to take down the puppy pen and let the little red hooligans hang out with the divas. Dh came in from locking up the cheeps to tell me that 2 of them were roosting on the top of the pen wire and one had flown out of the pen and was hangning out with the ladies. If there is no blood or bodies tomorrow then the pen goes and dh will have to go out in the rain and fix any possible escape spots the little devils may find. Actually Im kinda glad they are out because it means less work for me. Im quite sure the ladies will put them in their place. There are benefits of having new roomies, like getting chicken mommy to give them some of their food!

My silkie is getting better and was fooling around in the brooder. Time to move them on to a new home. Then I can have my basement back. Unless Rancher would like a dozen of those cute fuzzy adorable creatures!

Going to be cold tonight but thats okay. My internal thermostat will be happy. I wont need the fan tonight.

Have a good night all. Pharm tomorrow and hopefully the freaks will be elsewhere terrorizing people other than me.
I hear ya I'm a dog and cat groomer and I'm just booked a week out so busy is insane right now! I'm nervous about releasing the babies yet to the rest of the gang but as soon as the littlest one is ready to go I'm going to be super nervous! But my top hen (Barred Rock) has had time with them and pecked to show she was boss but that was it. So my girls know who's who its just my 14week old girls who are like adolescent teenagers that have me worried. They hate my one silkie but she is a brat and a pain in my *** but I love her, while my other silkie is second in command and though small pushes the teenagers out the way I love my chickens. But we are getting a fourth coop in August so if there are too many disputes we will have some extra space so I'm shouldn't be too worried!.

Lynzi sorry you got bees and flies I completely understand your frustration. My pit hound mix eats the flies for me the spiders I leave alone they eat other bugs and something is eating the bees. Yeah the chickens do a good job with bug control. My two cats only trap they don't catch while my third cat kills! My second dog will go after stuff mostly keeping things out of the yard even other cats and dogs. The third dog does nothing useful it was my cousin's it's a yorkie about 3lbs I'm hoping with some training it can do something.

So Friday nights I work late so I don't get to see my chickens really when I get home they already in their coop and roosting. I do obviously check on them and my top hen sounds the warning until realizes it's me, then I get a happy sound and say good night.

Well I hope the night finds everyone well. Take care.

Hello every one i'am new to this site and live in stafford ny i'am building my coop and run and was wondering if any one had any ideas on how to set it up thanks

Just think how a roo sees it. A. he dies try knowing cant do anything. B. gives warning gets girls in and alerts you. Another thing to think about is do you have a back up roo willing and able to take the main roo spot for watching hens? If not plan B. is much better than A. I would think, unless they in hen house.

Things to remember is people normaly use more than one dog to hunt foxes coons and other wild game. Yes you can do with one dog but one roo will get owned by a lot more.

If trapping I would suggest http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/355.html I know problem animals don't go in normal laws but this can help you in human ways seeing I don't think they would let you hunt inhumane ways.

just have to weigh out the options. Dead chickens, $$$ in electric netting or a leg traps.

When I hear the chicken alarm like you heard is when I grab the gun. Stays near me while I work.
Wish I worked from home to do that. Good thing though neighbor and I both don't go out at night with out something we watch houses/lights/noises. I just have to get him on que with the chicken alarm now. He carries 45 laser site I care 12gage red dot or 30-6. We don't see anything at day time though wich I guess is good.
