NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey guys,

Been a very very long time, but the hubster returned from deployment in December and its been non stop at our farmstead, been thinking about the BYC and the NEW YORK THREAD and hubster is encouraging me to get back on here and reacquaint our family with y'all.

Hello I am Jeannie I have been a member of the BYC for several years, my first BYC home was the OKIES IN THE BYC thread, we lived 6 good years there until the ARMY moved us to here in NY fall of 2011. We currently own a 130 year old Farmhouse on 15 acres here in the "North Country" and raise about 38 chickens (and counting). We are looking to get together with other like minded chicken lovers in around the area and hopefully make friends in the process... We loved attending auctions in our past home life and hope to locate some up here as well.

I look forward to getting to know you all much better now than when I first tried to establish myself here on the NY thread..

Well we had excitement here today .. A FOX ATTACK ! this afternoon !
I didnt do my usual perimeter walk today ...I heard the warning clucks ..around 3:00 & came flying out of the house running at my top speed towards the sounds of a distressed hen . It had one behind our wood burn pile ..Once I spotted the two of them fighting ..
I let out 3 piercing Screams AHHHHH..it dropped it & the hen came toward me ..( my throat is still sore from yelling at it ..
I was the only one home
My sons: Like did you get the gun ? Im like : No my first thought was to get to that hen & rescue it ..I didnt even think of the gun ..
Im glad I did coz I saved her life ..she is one of the babies from last year that we raised .

I at first I thought we lost 3 hens ( they disperse when there is a attack of course ) out of 8 ..Then one came back just fine , then another came back with some feather damage , ( she huddled in between the mailbox & light pole hiding ) She let me pick her up & I cuddled & held her about a hour ) walking around outside )She got small first aid . then another showed up almost no tail & big hunks of feathers out of her back & under her tail . She was bleeding some so she got taken in the house for medical care too .
So all are accounted for ..The babies were in the back of their cage on the deck making no noise at all till I spoke to them .
I dont know if the hens clucking scared them or me screeching !
so we had turmoil at our house today .. they are all settled in & safely asleep now.. all 22..

My avatar hen is a hatchery BLRW, and is my absolute favorite bird. She's a doll - she'll come sit on my lap if I sit down outside, just because she likes to hang out with me.

Lynzi, loved your story and pics, such fun. Gramma, good save. Shrieking works!
Planning to head to the Regional Market for plants and maybe soap, and Sweet Praxis bakes great things...who knows what I'll find. But I hope some tomatoes for sure. My sunflower seeds and amaranth seeds came from Johnnies select seeds in Maine, really quick. But it's too wet to work in the garden.

LOL thanks! And yes, Gramma-I'm going to try the duck thing today. I have heard the biggest one quack. But I'll have to see if any hiss.

Me too. There is a farmers market today at TSC on Bridge st. Then I plan to go to the regional or perhaps vice versa. The one at TSC is til 3 pm and I do need feed.

I haven't been buying as much at a time. I need a truck, my van needs new shocks.

Gramma you need to deal with that fox. If there is a man in the house send him out back with a six pack of root beer or Carafe' of coffee and tell him he can't come in til he's drank it all and marked the whole yard.

I take a flash light with me even though there is a light in the coop. as for water and food. I put a waterer right on the floor or a bowl and fill it each time I check on them. I keep every one on grower till I move the chicks to a new location. All the EE's have stopped brooding and one has even gone back to sitting.

I wear a glove and take all the eggs. NO MORE EE CHICKS! NO MORE BM CHICKS!
Rancher - if you have too many EE chicks, I'd be willing to come get a few

Would anyone be interested in raspberry plants? Mine have spread into areas that we don't want them and DH wants me to yank them. If someone wants them they can have them.

Well now if you've to many berries why not hang a sign PICK YOUR OWN and make some money. I would be glad to have to many berries. I'm not sure I'll get many this year and I've been putting in plants hoping for some to make jam.

Last year it was cheaper to buy them at the market than drive to pick them.

Let me give it some thought.
