NY chicken lover!!!!

Mood all better: I opened the Eglu last night just in case, and the EE pullet had returned this morning! And I got chicks hatching!!! Luna didn't come out this morning (well none of them did at first cause it was early), so I went in to check on her. There was a dead chick under her breastbone, but I heard peeping so I picked her chest up and found 2 live little chickies! The dead one looks like it hatched but was crushed, shell stuck to its back, one of the SS. Not sure of the other two yet, but think one is a PRock. They are so stinking tiny! Cute! I'll get pics later, going to let momma hen finish the rest.

Morning all. When I was going to bed last night I heard distressed chirping coming from Legolas coop outside my window so out I go in my nighty and a flashlight to see whats up. One of the chicks couldnt get under momma and was cold so I helped tuck it under her. Peeping stopped. Went out this morning and Eowyn has them all tucked under her and she isnt letting anyone but me near her. Her sisters keep looking but dont come too close. Legolas is clueless (typical man) and just kinda goes about his business. The littles are stinking cute though! Have to run to the feed store before work and get some chick feed. I did remember to move the waterer down so they can get to it and drink. I dipped everyones beak yesterday but I dont think they are ready to eat and drink yet. Maybe today. Eowyns eyes look a little better today and are opened a little. The pox is slowly going away but it really hit her face hard. Only other chicken I had that happen to was one of my barred rock divas, Nellie. Her eyes swelled shut and crusted too but went away after a couple of days of me taking care of them. I guess you could add chicken doctor to my list of skills.

Lap--glad to hear that your pullet returned safe and sound. Sorry to hear about your chick but at least you have the other two. Looking forward to the pics of them.

Speaking of...I will take pics after work and post them. This is your only warning Rancher! Alien pics coming up!

If you get a broody duckeh, I have Rouen eggs coming out my ears.
or another broody LF chicken

Does anyone Know if Agway has Non Medicated chick feed ?
I had my hubby pick up chick food ...Nothing on the bags says it is medicated ..
However after I opened it it says on the tag Medicated ...Grrrr I dont want to give them Meds they dont need .
I am wondering if they asked him if he wanted Medicated or not ..it seems like they asked me when I bought some ..
Has Amprolium in it and it Stinks ! Not that yummy corn smell ..

Yes, CountryMax carries both medicated and non-medicated Agway brand chick feed. It is probably more common for people to buy the medicated, so unless you specify, that is what you get.
I think last year I switched the babies from medicated to non-med once they got older. This group I have still on med, but am mixing and transitioning to layer pellets now. And will have a new batch of chicklets next week, hopefully.

I believe TSC has it too!

Congrats to everyone with their new babies, I can't wait to see more pictures.

Breella nice egg

Nutty well good luck with the decision making, and how is your shoulder doing?

My chickens are good I need to get some more wire fence material to keep the dogs out the garden. Hopefully there is some free stuff on craigslist. Have a great day, I'm off to work!

So incredibly PO'd at hubby tonight. I got a replacement pullet from Tab, put her in the Eglu on Sunday night. Beautiful splash EE from the silver blue Americauna project. She is flighty and can't be caught, so she was to stay in the Eglu. Also for quarantine, but mostly until she settled in a bit and relaxed. Don't expect a lap chicken, but didnt want her running away every time i approached. Hubby apparently thought she should be integrated today. In the middle of the day. While I was at work. And we had plans after work. So he tossed her in the stall with the other kids and left. Watched only long enough that they weren't beating up on her. Came home late to find that the kids put themselves to bed (yay!), but no signs of the EE anywheres. She could easily fly out of the stall. And the Eglu was locked back up so she couldn't even return to her one familiar place. I searched under the coop, in the barn and all around the house with the flashlight, but have little hope of seeing her again. So very very sad and very very mad. And feel bad for losing my replacement chicken that Tab so kindly gave me and I didn't expect.

Oh, no!!! How sad. Hope she comes back.

Oops... should've read further to see she came back. So glad she did!

Nutty--Good luck with hatch

Jen--Glad to hear she came back and is ok

Chickprincess--Sorry about the baby chick

Congrats to all of you with new chicks. They're all adorable!

Been running the bator empty and testing my thermometers. The GQF thermometer that has always been accurate we found to be the culprit of why our hatch was bad. It is a glass thermometer set on a plastic piece with the temperature markings. The glue that held the glass to the correct temperature markings had come undone after all the use we've put it through. The glass slid down when we picked it up and we didn't notice that it had. DH set the other thermometers in comparison to it, so it turns out the temperature was high the whole hatch. Makes me want to scream/cry with the disappointment.

We're going to sort birds again today and decide which ones to sell off. So I will have some started pullets, hens, young roos, and maybe one POL pullet up for sale. When I figure out what I'll post it. DH mentioned selling off his silver ameraucana but I don't really agree with him on that we'll have to see.

Well if you have anything special to hatch these two Ee's don't seem ready to give up. I reached in to take the eggs last night and the one girl grabbed hold of the glove and would not let go. Even after I pulled her out and set her on the ground. I don't know how but she had every egg in her nest box. I suspect she took them from the other nest box too.

Now another EE that hatched a Del chick hatched anther little black one but I found the Del chick dead in the nest box later that day. I immediately took the little bit and gave it to Buckwheat not wanting to risk something happening. I will leave the ee with all other eggs to do as she wishes. Not checking nor pestering her since she seems touchy. I'm not sure she didn't do in the del chick out of anger or whatever.

I am tired of chickens these days.

The BR's are not laying well at all, which I think is due to the BM's going into their run.

The BO and CR 's are not laying well which I think is due to them not being out to run since the BO roos bother the young chicks and I've lost some due to them hurting them. I may just shut the roos in the run and let the hens out.
