NY chicken lover!!!!

Gramma I'm not sure where did you get the teens from? Usually 5 - 6 months but I can imagine there is a bird or two out there laying early.

Chick I bought 6 amber links that were suppose to be white with amber speckles all over well only one get it the rest are pure white. They are 18wks, no eggs yet but my barred rock decided to lay in there best box in their coop silly girl.

Lynzi good luck with you job. My son has been playing outside all sweaty and dirty. When we went to the farm to get feed you couldn't stop him. It was so humid but worth to support local growers.

Pharm I'm praying for the best outcome.

Nutty--Good luck at your appointment. Broodiness would explain why that splash maran hasn't been laying for you. Good luck with her eggs too.

Going to work on making strawberry jam and chores around the house. Later I hope to set the incubator with some of our eggs. DH put in some of our pekin eggs a couple days ago. We've never hatched our duck eggs in the bator before so this will be a trial run.

Well I started my incubator over last night. Emptied out all water and just got the temp to 100 degrees. The humidity fell down to 26%. So this morning I started by placing a bowl in there and adding 1c of water. Went up to about 40%. Added another 1c of water and it was still only around 45%. I added 1 paper towel to the dish to absorb some of the water, went up to 46%. Just added another. Waiting....I'm trying different things adding them one a time so I know how much I need to add or take away to get the humidity just right. 2 cups of water just seems like a lot. I feel like pictures of incubators I've seen while people have eggs hatching don't have nearly that amount of water in them. It's always a small dish of some sort.

That's because it's surface area that determines the humidity, not the amount of water. If you add a different dish with a greater surface area of water, the humidity will go up even if you just barely cover the bottom of the dish.

I learned that when I first started hatching and I tried adding more water and nothing happened :p

Agreed! I went to the dollar store and bought a bunch of sponges and placed them in the bottom. By a bunch I mean a huge pack for a dollar but only put two or three in the bator.

I have been using an LG as a hatcher and just could not get the humidity up. Solved it by cutting down some foil pot pie tins and putting one in each corner under the wire. Then cut cheap spnges to fit all the way around the edges and used a plastic waterer with a long spout to add water to the sponges until the humidity came up. The bonus is that most of the bottom is covered and cleanup is easier. No problems lifting the lid to poke the water spout in and re-wet the sponges.

Today has been a busy day. Moved my two flocks together as my blaco ajd blue marans were on isolation. It seems as the.roos don't know what to think of all the girls and are still sticking to just eachother puzzled. However over the weekend I finally got my cayugas. What a search that was conmeedcidering we live in NY lol. Just seemed they should be abundant. They bare not. Came home with a 8 no old pair and one single duckling. Then a khaki duckling too. My one lonely duckling has stopped crying now that she has two more girls and mama and daddy.with her. I'm not sure what to do now about my broodier hen still wanting to take this duckling under her wing as my older ducks are not allowing this as frequently as my hen would like. They are all housed together and get along muss fine and fie.tires crossed.that with the addition of the new flock they will still door fine. Now need to make jam and a lot of it and finish the waterfall on the ducks pond if it doesn't rain :D

Afternoon all. I am a horrible chicken momma.

I took my sick hen out of the cage and gave her a bath because she stinks so bad. I found that she has a puncture wound of some sort on her lower abdomen and it must be infected as it has a mass of worms in it.

They came out while I was bathing her.

It was gross. I feel bad because I should have checked her more closely but I couldnt see it until I bathed her.

While she seems okay, I cannot believe that this isnt recoverable. I will have dh put her down tonight. I am an idiot and should have know better. I do believe now that it is NOT coryza but is the pox my silkies have.

All my other silkies look good, even Eowyn, my broody momma. I do have a chick that is going downhill and I am not sure if it the heat or something else. I whipped out the rooster booster today and gave everyone chicken powerade in their waterers. Hopefully this helps. I thank all of you for your support, thoughts and prayers. This has been a rollercoaster ride.
