On the flies, I use PDZ mixed with sand on a poop board, and have no flies in the coop. I scoop every one to three days. There are only 8adults in there now. The youngsters live in other substandard housing...but flies aren't much of an issue. Did see some Poultry Protector at the feed store and bought it just in case. It's active ingredient is potassium sorbate and it says it is non toxic. But several of the adults have messy heinies, and the fly strike was scary.

I wish now I didnt use the zip strips but its the only way I could secure the solar panel and the vents. I am hoping that the tar wrap & tar I use will solve all the problems. The vents have really made it cooler in there this summer.

For the fly spray, check your ingredients. You may not want to be spraying that stuff where your breakfast comes out of. There are several variations and different active ingredients in each brand. Some are labeled safe for dogs too. I think there may be some safe for dairy/beef cattle, which is another food product animal, so may be a better choice that horse spray. I know that I can't buy Tri-Tec 14 flyspray, because one of my horses breaks out in hives (only him and only that kind out of the several I have used over the years), so know that flyspray is a chemical and can have reactions. Although I have had it blow back into my face without problems, I wouldn't advocate getting it around chicken eyes/noses. And with chickens preening themselves, they will injest some. Just my thoughts.
And while we are on the subject, I haven't tried/used it on chickens, but I like Swat. It comes in a little plastic jar in either clear or hot pink colors. It is a wound ointment with fly repellent. I coat the inside of the horses ears when the gnats are biting or if they get any bites/cuts/scrapes. Keeps the flesh soft, supple, and the flies away. Have used it on the dog's ears too when the flys bite her ear tips. Again, read the label to see if it is safe to use on food producing animals.

Afternoon all. I am a horrible chicken momma.

I took my sick hen out of the cage and gave her a bath because she stinks so bad. I found that she has a puncture wound of some sort on her lower abdomen and it must be infected as it has a mass of worms in it.

They came out while I was bathing her.

It was gross. I feel bad because I should have checked her more closely but I couldnt see it until I bathed her.

While she seems okay, I cannot believe that this isnt recoverable. I will have dh put her down tonight. I am an idiot and should have know better. I do believe now that it is NOT coryza but is the pox my silkies have.

All my other silkies look good, even Eowyn, my broody momma. I do have a chick that is going downhill and I am not sure if it the heat or something else. I whipped out the rooster booster today and gave everyone chicken powerade in their waterers. Hopefully this helps. I thank all of you for your support, thoughts and prayers. This has been a rollercoaster ride.

Thanks JLaw! I'll see if I can get something figured out, I really don't want to lose another baby.
Suppose I should go check in on the chickens, see if it is still alive or if Luna decided to crush another 1 or 5.

Edit: The little injured chick died. Was laying flat on its back, kinda like a turtle. Good thing I have a big horse manure pile to bury all these little bodies in.

I did tar round the vents and solar panel today when I got home from work. It was the kind that can be used in the rain since its been threatening all day. Fingers crossed it does the trick. The only reason I hope we get rain is so I can see if it worked lol

You can make your own fly spray! My recipe that I use for my horse is:

1 cup Avon Skin So Soft bath oil
1 cup mouthwash, any flavor you want
a few drops of scented oil of your choice

I like to emulsify in blender and then put to a spray bottle.

Ah, yes, I've heard of a similar recipe using Skin-so-Soft. But with something else, maybe white vinegar?
