NY chicken lover!!!!

Yesterday I moved the babies dog crate to the other side of the pen, and made it much nicer with a lovely green tarp secured to the chain link fence and covering the crate and areas around it for shade. Put their recycled garden wire(not welded) fence around to keep a safe area for them to retire to away from all the olders who are bent on teaching them respect. When the wind and rain started they must have been afraid of the different sounds and fled the area. They were all huddled pitifully under a small pussy willow bush looking drenched. I went out and rounded them up in the midst of the downpour and got even more drenched myself. It was one of the less enjoyable half hours of chicken keeping. Today they will stay in their new location so they get used to it.

Hope you all are keeping dry because we sure aren't. I'm jumping in here without reading to the end so I'm hoping I'm not repeating. Flies have been just horrible here. Last week end I raked anything I could down to the earth outside the coop (Not where chickens could get to) right down to the dirt and sprinkled lime. No more flies there. It's not too bad inside either coop but they are dry and ventilated. It seems to be where it's wet and bedding or dried grass is. If we go out, we get bitten terribly. The bites swell up huge. It's never been like this. We have wild catnip all over.

Now the Amber Sex Links. I bought several from A & J Poultry and they look more like RIR. I was told they could be anything from all red to all white. They are quite pretty. I tried to upload a pic but still won't let me.

The purpose of Sex Links is that hens end up one color and roosters end up another color, depending on the breeds crossed. Red Sex Links are red, Amber Sex Links should be white or with amber patches. Sounds more like you have Red Sex Links.

Blondie laid another egg. What a strange girl she is. She is still sitting on the eggs for the most part. I don't think I will leave the eggs with her, though. Especially her first time, I just don't think the instincts to take care of babies would be there. Even though she is sitting, the broody noises have pretty much stopped.
I think I'll throw these eggs in the incubator and hope for the best. I was really hoping for a momma to raise them.

Good news, though... Our neighbor told dh a couple days ago that their dog got a hold of a fox. Fox didn't stand a chance against their dog. Good boy.

We partially watched a show on Hulu last night about chicken farms. This one area in OK is so badly contaminated that parts of the river are 70% depleted of oxygen because of overgrowth of algae, caused by the chicken poop. One chicken "house" can contain 25,000 chickens. Sick. They showed video of the insides of the farm. I would much rather eat a healthy chicken than one of those poor things. I don't want to eat my own, but next time I'm our in Macedon I'll pick up a couple (processed) chickens at Nature Berry Farms.

Question...what does everyone do with the unwanted roosters they hatch?
I have 7 right now that I need to find something to do with...my idea situation would be finding somebody to take them but I know that wont happen...I would cull them myself but I hate to see them go to waste and I don't know if I have the stomach for it...I just feel terrible...
