Aww, so cute Hen. You inspired me and I just hatched out 4 sweetgrass poults from eggs I got at a swap. Suspect one might be a bronze because it is colored differently. Might order from Porter's next year to expand the flock.

I'm really impressed with these Porter's birds. I did have three losses out of seventeen birds (they threw in two extra) - one lost in shipping, the one with spraddle leg, and another one that failed to thrive, but that's not unusual by any means. The fourteen I have are friendly, healthy, and growing like weeds!

I just got everyone to bed. What a struggle, reminds me of babysitting when I was a teen. Everyone wants what someone else has. Everyone wants to be out the latest. They all want to stay up past their bedtime and eat stuff they shouldn't, and I cant tell their mothers on them. No one wants to sleep in their own bed...the list goes on. I was being nice and seeing they didn't go to bed hungry or thirsty. Tomorrow they can wander around in the dark and just go to bed without a snack.

I bet those adorable turklets go to bed when you ask them the first time, I can see their little halos.

Ha, my teenagers are the same way right now. The adults are all settled in the coop and the kids are wandering around outside. Of course it doesn't help when the kids do go to bed early that the one red hen goes after them. But the kids have learned that when I carry the lunge whip that they best be heading to bed. Don't use the lash, but the stick gives them a good push in the right direction.
Got my first pullet egg tonight! Brown leghorn, because I had 5 white eggs. Only slightly smaller than the Ancona, and she is such a tiny little thing! The other pullets are getting more red. Soon everyone will be laying!

DONT USE APPLE CIDER VINEGAR ...BUGS LOVE IT ..WONT WANT TO LEAVE ..IT WILL DRAW OTHER BUGS TOO

You could try it ...( DA ) Boiling water down the hole should be a easy fix ..
The key is you want to make it so they dont like it there & move

I have had very good luck pouring boiling water down their holes. Did it once a day for two days. Got all those little suckers.....

The doctor's office called with my lab results just a little while ago. My sugar levels are good, but I'm anemic. They would like me to start taking iron. I was hoping they would let me adjust my diet first but they would like me to take the tablets.

It is still raining everyday at some point here. The floors in our barn are wet and everything is damp. It makes the animals more stinky and I don't like having it be damp it their living area. We need some drier weather.

The iron in prenatal pills always made me constipated.....eat extra fiber......

Yes we need drier weather. We are having our floors sanded and poplyurethaned. If it stays this wet, we won't be able to walk on them till Saturday. My husband is in the basement with the dog and I am upstairs with the cats. I have to use a ladder to get up there......what is life without an adventure?

Man I must have some easy chickens. They don't really fight, they all go in they're own coop older chickens in big coop, younger ones in the smaller coop. They all go to bed at dusk no flashlight needed to chase any in or find any. The only problem is the older ones go in smaller coop in day time and eat they're food cause the little ones don't normaly eat all their food. Also sometimes they deside to go into the front yard which I don't like and have to chase them back sometimes.

Now I do have a question should I worry about my roo mounting or trying to mount my hens the ones he's going after are like 15 weeks old. As far as I know he just started doing it this weekend and they don't seem to like him trying. They let out some noises but I never see him mount them wife has only once though. He seems to leave the ones that are younger alone since they tend to stay away from the older group. My roo is maybe 1.5 the size of the others he's mounting.

Quick question. What do ya'll clean your bator out with. I used hot water in bath tub with alittle dishwashing liquid. I thought of making like a 1/10 bleach/water solution but wasn't sure if it was needed or would mess up the Styrofoam. I have a plastic insert so everything was mainly on that but some after hatch stuff rubbed on cords, thermometers, and hygrometers.

Do you have any roos ? My hens were like that before we had a Roo ..now he puts them to bed ...Still have to chase the teens & babies though ..

Yes, Earl is all about crowing and mating, not too good about putting them to bed. If I stay inside until it is half dark they are all in place, but if I want them in by 8:15 or 8:30 it is babysitting flashbacks. Earl doesn't take responsibility for the young ones at all, he knows how to pick his battles.

I'm not really sure where to post this but I live in central ny and I sub to this post and I need HELP. This is our first year being chickens owners. No one we know is really into chickens. I have done research, read books, ect. I ended up getting 6 older hens(almost 2 yrs old) and two of them are coughing. I gave all of them vet rx a few days ago but it doesn't help. We plan on keeping them as egg layers/ pets. All 6 were in rough shape when I got them 2 weeks ago. They were bald and very under weight. They all are looking great except for the coughing. Can anyone guide me as far as medication? I have no clue what to do and looking it up is crazy. Too many answers and I don't know if its from experienced people or just people who post answers on the web. Thanks folks, any and all help would be extremely appreciated.
