NY chicken lover!!!!

Crystal - sorry to hear about your flock, but Welcome! Like others said, make sure your bedding is dry and not to dusty. I know I've gotten shavings before that were more like saw dust and it caused my chickens to cough/sneeze. But they got over it in a day. This sounds more serious...Hope you are able to find a solution.

Quick question. What do ya'll clean your bator out with. I used hot water in bath tub with alittle dishwashing liquid. I thought of making like a 1/10 bleach/water solution but wasn't sure if it was needed or would mess up the Styrofoam. I have a plastic insert so everything was mainly on that but some after hatch stuff rubbed on cords, thermometers, and hygrometers.

Thanks
Jlaw

I just use some dish soap and a little bleach. Then I let it sit and air out for a day or so.

I'm not really sure where to post this but I live in central ny and I sub to this post and I need HELP. This is our first year being chickens owners. No one we know is really into chickens. I have done research, read books, ect. I ended up getting 6 older hens(almost 2 yrs old) and two of them are coughing. I gave all of them vet rx a few days ago but it doesn't help. We plan on keeping them as egg layers/ pets. All 6 were in rough shape when I got them 2 weeks ago. They were bald and very under weight. They all are looking great except for the coughing. Can anyone guide me as far as medication? I have no clue what to do and looking it up is crazy. Too many answers and I don't know if its from experienced people or just people who post answers on the web. Thanks folks, any and all help would be extremely appreciated.

Just my advice.

1. keep there house cool and vented. DO NOT WORRY they won't freeze. Chickens do better with the cold than the heat.

2. Keep lots of clean water for them.

3. If you are feeding them crumbles that may be the cause of their cough. Dusty crumbles make mine cough, which is why I feed pellets.

4. Keep them calm. Stress may be the problem. Stress can bring on illness. Give them time to adjust to their new home. No sudden moves, slow and easy.

5. Don't over do the treats. In fact I wouldn't even give them anything other than feed for a the time being. You could add some electrolytes to their water. They now have it in single one gallon water packets for easy measure.

Don't be afraid or panic I'm sure they will be fine.

And Welcome to BYC,

Rancher

As just mentioned to Crystal, I'm also having a problem with one of my younger birds.

The Brabanter seems to have either an eye injury or an eye infection. Her left eye is obviously bothering her because she keeps rubbing it on her shoulder. It occasionally opens, but is often shut and looks a little swollen. It's hard for me to get a good look because of her puffy head feathers, but also because she won't stay still while I try to examine her. Vision is definitely affected, as she tries to peck things but often misses now. I don't know whether there is an underlying issue that might be more serious, or when she got pecked last week from the older birds, perhaps it was injured?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

This need to keep the two groups apart is really causing me some stress.

I would assume its a injury & treat as such. If you can get someone to hold her while you flush the eye with sterile solution and give antibiotics. LYnzie says she has something that might help. It couldn't hurt. I've discovered in the years I"ve had chickens, that its usually the more serious problem when I have a feeling something is wrong. When I see something that is just off, I don't let it go another day anymore. That extra day could be the difference in a cure or not.

I use diluted bleach and water on both my incubators. I researched it online and it didn't say I couldn't......and they do get gross....

I had something like this happen recently. One was to my favorite rooster Bruce and his son. Bruces left eye was swollen shut and he couldn't open it for almost 3 weeks. His son got it first and I lost him about 3 weeks after it fist completely closed. I gave Bruce some mix a friend recommended to me but I can't think of it right now. When it comes to me I will let you know.

Thank you for the responses. I will do my best to get the eye bathed tomorrow.

Lynzi, I might take you up on that offer; will PM you, if so. How kind of you...

Marq: what sort of antibiotic would be the best in this case? How is it administered to just one bird, or do they all get put on it?

County Boy, do you know what caused that problem in your birds? Sorry about your rooster succumbing to the (related?) issue -- do you know what it was? If you think of the Rx you tried with success on Bruce, let me know. Thanks so much.

This weather is really not helping things, I'm sure...all the moisture and heat are breeding grounds for bacteria. I hear after a brief cool down, the high heat and humidity are returning on Monday. I'm getting to the end of my rope, I swear.

Thanks, everyone.

Anyone have any experience with Dark Brahma/Crosses? I'm worried about Duane. He's huge. They are only at most 16 weeks old. Duane is a monster. His legs are HUGE, his body is HUGE. He's at least twice the size of even my biggest of the girls. Is it normal for a rooster to get so big so fast? He was supposed to be a Banty, and instead he's so big I'm worried that I'll have to separate him from the ladies so he doesn't hurt any of them when he matures enough and starts to get frisky.

Hello & Welcome to The NY Thread .
How kind of you to help these chickens .
1st ) what kind of cough is it ? Is it a dry cough or a fluid sounding cough ?
Mine had a fluid sounding cough think it was from the ammonia in the coop ...does your coop smell like ammonia ?
Are your chickens getting enough fresh air flow ?
.I stopped the Vet rx cuz it wasnt helping her .
.
Advice from Our Lovely Pharmacist

Henicillin

Apr 22, 2013 at 6:16 pm
I'd give 250 mg amoxicillin twice daily for 7 days - that should do it.<- for a regular size chicken - about 7 pounds
Is your chicken regular size or smaller ?
( do you have a vet ? I got mine to give me some Amoxcillin when I told him what the dose was for a chicken )
Or they sell it on Ebay too

me :I have started giving her a saline solution drip in her nose ...she swallows some too .

Hen: maybe dose her up on vitamins as well. You can use liquid children's vitamins without iron, like Poly-Vi-Sol. A lot of people swear by them. I'd probably just keep pushing fluids and vitamins and see what happens
I hope this helps ...Feel free to ask more questions ...
