NY chicken lover!!!!

o.m.g I'm always on Craigslist specially the free section getting stuff I've only had one real problem in that someone was scared of me it was really awkward. then another time I bought a dog house from this guy and his wife got mad and wanted it back so I brought it back and he gave me another dog house something else for free and I got my money back. I guess I don't worry too much about CL most take one look at me and are scared! Sometimes stereotypes work in my favor.

We just had an instance yesterday (happens to be in Rochester). The ad is for a car and it shows nice pictures in front of a decent house and neighborhood. Dh called on it and the guy says it was originally his grandparents and then given to his uncle and he was selling it for him. The guy gave dh an address of where the car is. The ad says he's selling "MY" Buick... and then also says "Cash only". The address he gave him is for a nasty apartment complex off of Norton St which has many police beats listed online. Hmmm... what happened to the nice house and neighborhood??? Cash only??? Yeah, right.

Great thanks! I'll have to give them a call. I don't mind waiting. I looked it up and it's only (apparently) 47 minutes from my house so I could even drive back to get them. I would only bring 5 so I'm glad they don't have a minimum.

I brought 20 dozen to a local farm store yesterday. The week before I didn't bring any as I sold out at home. Some weeks I sell out at home, some weeks I don't. But the good news is the farm store pays retail for eggs. Probably pay more than most of you charge.

I didn't even think of doing this. Great idea! I may have to go scope out some stores.

Yay! Looked up the next Livestock auction in Canandaigua and it's Aug. 17th. Maybe my poor hens can grow some feathers back. Their feathers on their wings are literally snapped in half. Can't wait for that boy to go!
Hopefully, the tetra tint rooster will be a good boy. So far, so good. Many of the hens will put him in his place when they don't like what he's doing. He's still pretty small.

What breed is best for a rooster? What I want is the trait for good laying of large brown eggs, a good alarm rooster and docile with people. I have had two Black Australorp roos that have ended up turning on me and being human aggressive. I don't do ANYTHING EVER that could be viewed by them as threatening to the flock. I could just be standing in the run feeding the hens and they have come after me. It's been very frustrating.
(Sigh) I miss my Henry (in my avatar). He was a perfect rooster.

He was an EE.

Miranda the silver blue americauna has passed. RIP pretty girl.
Should I do a preventative deworming on the rest of the flock? She was never fully integrated with the flock, only spent the night in the coop twice and didn't free range with them. The 4 young roos are in the Eglu she was in, so could worm them, but don't want to lose egg sales due to withdrawal.
Were the white crawly things lice or maggots? Giving her a bath won't ge t rid of the maggots for next time. ff they were in her vent, the were eating inside her. If they were lice, then they were sucking her blood. Ivermectin or Eprinex would take care of the lice as well as carbyl for Rose mold. For maggots you have to drench the area with peroxide. When you do, they come flying out as they do not like peroxide. Repeat several times.

I've lost a few to the heat...always sad.

I deal the eggs at work. People actually call me the egg lady or the "egg dealer" It's great working in a town where people can't have chickens so everybody is more than happy to buy eggs from me.

Yeah no doubt things can be shady but like I said looking the way I look I usually don't have a problem, plus I live off of dewey in the city so i can usually tell whats on the up and up and what isn't. I unfortunately have a slight addiction to craigslist especially that free section LOL I'm hoping to find some supplies this fall for aquaponics and for building my greenhouse. But I also go around with my truck and pick goodies off the curbs as well. Funny I love Norton St. they do have some nice houses though, but then again I love city life.

Sharing Fluffy Puffy's little brood. She's been broody for a year and I have the bites and bruises to prove it.

I had 8 turkey eggs and a dozen welsummer eggs that I got at a swap in a styrofoam Farm Innovator incubator when my Brinsea arrived. I had been collecting Fluffy Puffy (silkie/bantam brahma cross I got from Tab and Travis last year) eggs for a week and a few silkie eggs and popped them into the Brinsea with the turkey eggs that I moved over. Disappointing welsummer hatch with only four, and the turkeys went into lockdown next. Meanwhile I got a dozen buff rock hatching eggs from Florida. Jeez, going to run out of brooders.

So I quick set up a broody space for the little monster with a cardboard box and took her five partially incubated eggs down and slipped them under her. (More vicious bites) Then started thinking about what to do with the four remaining silkie eggs. Two hatched on day 22 when Fluffy's eggs all hatched and I wondered if the other two were any good. Candled and one of the eggs screamed, the other didn't look quite right. Stuffed everything into my shirt and carried them down to the coop in the middle of the day and slipped the two chicks and two eggs under Fluffy with a pip in one of the eggs. (more bites) The pipped egg hatched and I heaved the bad one the next day.

Just saying that with all the concern of getting it just right to hatch anything, those eggs were totally abused and I think that some of the issue is about having healthy strong breeders. I was in and out of those incubators several times a day shuffling eggs and adjusting humidity. No different than a hen getting on and off the nest and moving the eggs around.

Three of the buffs hatched. Most of the rest looked like the air cells ruptured or they were scrambled. Vowed to stop hatching and focus on building adequate housing for the rest of the summer even though someone local offered Narragansett turkey hatching eggs. (Keep telling myself no, no, no)
