NY chicken lover!!!!

Has anyone ever ordered from the Poultry Hatchery in Fayette, NY? It's about an hour from me and I figure if they won't ship just two female ducks I can always just drive out there. Unless anyone knows of anyone with two females available? I was looking for runners since my husband really likes the black runners. I gave up on trying to find more Magpies, no one has any. Eventually one of these magpie drakes will have to go, I just don't know which one. I love them both. They're so pretty, even the black and white. Thought I liked the blues better but I love them both equally, not sure what I'm going to end up doing.

Have you looked for hatching eggs? I haven't ordered chicks from a hatchery since my first order in the beginning. I've considered getting rid of all my roos and just ordering pullets from a hatchery.

Good news on the hubby front!

Trees of Antiquity is great, but try http://www.cumminsnursery.com/ - they're in upstate NY (Ithaca) and have a huge repository of antique and modern varieties. Trees of Antiquity concentrates more on California and west coast varieties. Cummins stock is grown here, so it's all hardy and acclimated to Upstate NY. I've ordered a number of their trees and have been very pleased -- I'm a sucker for antique / heirloom varieties of anything!

My grandfather was an apple farmer. He would roll over in his grave if he found out I wasn't getting the hybrids from Wafflers Nursery in Wolcott. First he told me "don't get in to apples, they're too much work". Then he said "go to Wafflers".

Is it possible to be getting bit by something in the coop and the chickens not being affected at all? I am getting bites, similar to flea bites and I think we've narrowed it down to the coop. I have checked the chickens after dark with a flashlight. Nothing. Total coop cleanout, sprayed neem and put down poultry dust. Our dog does not have fleas and no one else in the family is getting bit... which leads me to the coop since I'm pretty much the only person that goes in there.
Doing Eprinex tonight but feeling very frustrated! And itchy.

Have you thought of the dreaded bedbugs? They are making a comeback......

I would have planted apples but not enough of our land is cleared. That and that they take longer than I have before I'll be eating apples from my own trees. I should be eating my own Currants, gooseberries and raspberries but that is not happening.

I suspect who ever buys this place when I sell in my old age will be reaping all my labor.

Growth Rate

Dwarf apple trees only grow to be between 5 and 7 feet tall, and can take between 2 and 4 years to produce viable fruit. Semi-dwarf trees take between 3 and 6 years to reach maturity and produce viable fruit. These trees can reach over 20 feet tall. Standard apple trees will not produce fruit until they are between 6 and 10 years of age.

every site agree's with this. Apple tree's don't take long at all to mature to bear fruit. If I didn't already have dozens of apple tree's I would plant some

Hi Everyone, I live in Central NY just south east of Syracuse near Cazenovia. I have 11 chickens with plans to add in the spring more chickens, possibly bantams and ducks, with possibly goats and horses to follow in the following years. I'm a new chicken owner but I'm now an addict. I wish that I had enough time to read all the posts, but my computer isn't fast enough. I hope that all are welcome?

Great info Stoney thanks for posting. I wanted to plant a few dwarf trees in chicken yard and why not apples that are multi purpose  

I bought three apple trees last year from my local nursery. They're planted up by my chicken coops. I have a Fuji tree and I'm not sure of the other two cuz the tags had fallen off when I bought them. I have two apples on the Fuji tree, one apple on another and none on the middle tree. Not sure what happened with that one this year.....I can't wait to try the apples though.

I have but ideally I only want 2 female ducks. I would buy hatching eggs if I knew people interested in taking some ducklings. I would also prefer adults or teenagers rather than ducklings. This way I know what I'm getting.
