Im glad you are finally taking it easy ...Sorry about your dog ..Can you put up posters for it ?

THE INCREDIBLE EDIBLE EGG -
It WORKS ...I took a Cold Egg out of the frig & separated it. With a paper towel slathered some of it on ...almost instant ..RELIEF .
It has calmed the redness & removed ALL PAIN . i SLEPT FINE NO PAIN
I have some bubbling / blisters on the skin ...but no pain whatsoever ..TOTALLY AMAZING

That's terrific! I had read that somewhere (email from a friend, maybe) in the last few months, but in all honesty had completely forgotten about it until I read horsekeeper's post. I don't think I'll forget again. So glad you are getting relief!

Quote: I just put some in a small container and just glob it on & then wrap with vet wrap than some duct tape over it. Its been in the mid 80s here so the oil was liquid so I keep it in the fridge and just scrape a piece of and plop it on her sore. It melts fast with this heat so I put a big glob on it.

Oh and if you leave the container with coconut oil in it on the ground your other hens will eat it. Ask me how I know........ Those little boogers ate almost all the oil before I could greens feet rewrapped. And the orange vet wrap it fun to play keep away with .....

Depends on what you are canning ..
Jam , applesauce , pickles , Vegetables ..tomatoes ...you can can meat also .
it is like you are
making your own store for the winter ...

I suggested jams and things that can be Canned without a pressure canner. Pressure Canners are more money and a must for low acid foods like meats, beans and other non acid vegetables.

It IS storing your own food for the winter. Many on the Canning thread do much much more than I do. Make note of who they are in case you need to find them if you run out of food.

I did some canning last year. I made blackberry jelly, diced tomatoes and applesauce. I was planning on making lots of tomato sauce and salsa this year but my plants didn't grow well this year so I won't be canning any kind of tomatoes this year. My favorite is applesauce. I make lots of it and give some of it away for Christmas with my jelly. We love to have it for snacks and I like to use it when I bake. I freeze a lot too. I still have some squash in the freezer from last year. I put the zucchini in everything that I can.

There's a canning thread on BYC???
I canned a case of half pint salsa jars last week. The case is half gone. My entire family LOVES it, so I bought 25 pounds of tomatoes today. Still need a dozen green peppers, etc. If I make 4 cases, MAYBE I'll have enough to get us through till Christmas.

An elderly friend of mine in Canada used to make the best crab apple jam...she passed away many years ago. I am so tempted to try making my own, but like Lynzi, I have no experience canning or preserving. My mother makes a sort of chutney she calls "chili" but it is not like the meat dish -- it is made of tomatoes, peaches, peppers and other fruits, veggies and pickling spices. It's a huge task, but is unique and tasty. She used to preserve our pear crop from the 2 trees in our backyard where I grew up. So she could help me....if someone has a good, old-fashioned type crab apple JELLY recipe?

I do have a recipe for Crab Apple jelly. Alas! I have no Crab Apples.

Many folks don't like to make jellies as they take more work. So if someone give you home made jelly be extra grateful.

The recipe I have says to put the seeds and stems in the pot so it must be extra easy to cook them down. I have many recipes as I've three books. Most recipes make small amounts so it's nice to try new kinds. I won't make egg plant preserves again. No one like them and they were a lot of work.
