NY chicken lover!!!!

Gramma Chick, this was shared on Facebook and this forum seems like the perfect place to pass it along. It may help your burn to heal.

"Keep in mind this treatment of burns is being included in teaching beginner fireman. First Aid consists of first spraying cold water on the affected area until the heat is reduced which stops the continued burning of all layers of the skin. Then, spread the egg whites onto the affected area.

One woman burned a large part of her hand with boiling water. In spite of the pain, she ran cold faucet water on her hand, separated 2 egg whites from the yolks, beat them slightly and dipped her hand in the solution. The whites then dried and formed a protective layer.

She later learned that the egg white is a natural collagen and continued during at least one hour to apply layer upon layer of beaten egg white. By afternoon she no longer felt any pain and the next day there was hardly a trace of the burn. 10 days later, no trace was left at all and her skin had regained its normal color. The burned area was totally regenerated thanks to the collagen in the egg whites, a placenta full of vitamins."

I had some leftover prescription triamcinolone acetonide.from a burn I had last time .
Its a type of synthetic steroid almost identical to Cortizone (Hydrocortizone lotion) so its almost certainly going to reduce swelling and reduce recovery time.
I am going to try the egg whites too.
Thank you for the tip

Gramma: hope it is all gone - burns can really be long term pain

Pyxis: How is Lacy and vets? Did bad neighbor pay the vet bill ? Want me to come out there and bop them in the nose ?

I'm sure they just are beside themselves with having to butcher what some of them regularly eat - which means they are way out of touch with the life they are living. Sometimes common sense goes out the window. Sure, try to get them homes & then send them to any local butcher and be done with it - don't throw hard won donation money after something that people can't even give away ... spend it on the other abused animals that have a chance of recovery and finding a new home. Well - that's just my rant. I like em all (animals) but I'm gunna eat my extra roos right around Thanksgiving !

All you talking about guns, I had to use mine to kill a rabid animal once, and that has made me a strong advocate for letting people that want them have them. So I won't get into it all - we've heard it and such - but if you are new to guns - really, treat them like they are hot metal and loaded at all times ... respect them and always think about what is beyond what you may be aiming at - as we don't all hit smack middle of the target ...

for instance, my chicken coop is somewhat near my house - and I have a plan in case of predator attack up to bear size ... If I have to shoot - I am going UPSTAIRS so that I am aiming DOWN - therefore any off target bullet will lodge in the ground and not fly wild where a neighbor may be walking a dog (yes, they walk at all hours).

I don't post much - but I read them all and learn a lot from you guys - so thanks to all who are part of this chat group !!!

Thank you Metella, I am totally on board with the safety stuff. I tried really hard to get my little boys not to play "guns"--too much violence in the world--until I found that a determined little boy can turn a book and a ruler into a gun. So eventually I bowed to the inevitable and changed my mantra to don't point that gun at anyone, no not the dog!

And everywhere in chicken land is downhill from the house, but upstairs would have the best sight lines. More brush hogging to do, but hurt my hip last time. People of a certain age need to not do these activities for long periods of time. So much for invincible.

Thank you for the reminder!

I'm 138 posts behind and can't catch up.  Sorry.
Good news is Ms. B (former bumblefoot patient) wasn't killed by the mink a few months ago.  Bad news is the bumblefoot is back.  She was limping quite severely.  I brought her in tonight and soaked her in epsom salt and warm water.  I didn't need a blade.  I was able to grab the black scab and pull it straight out.  Part of the core, about 1/3" long was attached.  Poor thing.  Whoever says chickens don't react to pain like we do lies.  I swear she was crying, curled her toes up and pulled her foot away.  I could barely bandage her up.  I put a good amount of drawing salve (ichthammol) on a piece of gauze and wrapped her up with vetrap.  I hope it's enough to help the pain and start to heal again.  I'll check her progress tomorrow.
Good nursing practice, huh?

I have been working on one of my hens bumblefoot for months now. I am using coconut oil now and have noticed an improvement in 2 days. Def shrinking in size and I got the scabs off last night.

I've tried iodine & sugar wrap, drawing salve, blue kote, surgery & Epsom salt soaks. So gar the coconut oil has shown the best results.

Cass did you have any samatra hens ? They are so much smaller than my other chickens
Yes they are. But they can FLY, so it is a rare day when a roo actually catches them. My chickens are all sizes and no one has a problem with that. HOWEVER I do not tolerate a rooster that is aggressive to the point of it being rape. They taste yummy and there are so many roosters to choose from, I just keep the nice ones.

Interesting! That will be my next plan of attack if the drawing salve doesn't help. What did you do? Glop it on and wrap it up?

Tab, hope your dog comes back quickly!

Gramma, I must have missed your post about being burned. So sorry! Feel better fast. I have also heard of the egg white thing. I would believe it.

Ms. B is walking without a limp this morning, but while she is just standing around she holds up her foot. I will check her foot later today to see how the swelling is.

Dang internet has been in and out. Expecting time warner anytime now. Still no sign of Pippy I hope she turns up.

Gramma --good luck with the burn.
