NY chicken lover!!!!

I need a new project to work on. Haven't been outta a work a week and I'm already getting bored. I was thinking of building a larger run for the silkie coop. I'd attach it at the front door. This way they can get out a little more. I was going to use the round pen I was using for the ducks but it's just a "pen" and isn't covered. So the other chickens could easily fly up and into it. I have wood, chicken wire, and hardware mesh. I might as well. Wouldn't have to go out and buy supplies. It's just been so hot here! Maybe once the fall weather comes I'll be in the mood to do it.
join us on the "what are you canning thread. Lots of stuff just needs a water bath canner. I've made Plum Lime jam, Plum , Raspberry Blueberry, Nectarine Blueberry. Black Currant Rhubarb. Now getting ready to do Apple sauce as soon as I can catch a break.

I've heard lots of talk on this "canning" subject. I always wondered what people do with this stuff after canning? Does it get put in a recipe? Eaten by itself? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I've never canned anything before nor do I know anyone who does.

Pickles & me ...Just did something stupid ...opened the pressure cooker before it was ready ..
Impatience is a terrible thing
water came spraying out ...Got my shirt & shorts ...& my leg .. I threw my clothes off ...to get the heat off me ...
my Stomach is burned & a little bit of my leg ..Im putting cold wash cloths on it to cool it ..for pain relief & to sooth the skin .
Dont think I will go to the hospital ..no insurance ..see what hubby says when he gets home ..

100 chickens are probably heading for that Farm Animal Sanctuary in Watkins Glen. I see pictures of the place and think how tasty they would be after taking shelter in my freezer.
Scored a 10 hole nest unit on Craigslist! Had two LONG trough type feeders too, one with legs, but couldn't fit it all in the Escape. How I miss a real truck. If they won't fit, will either borrow a truck or let someone else take them. Guy is taking down an old barn and just wants the stuff gone. Nest is only missing the top roost bar, easy fix. Pretty good shape, not much rust. $25!
And I got my egg delivery from Tab & Trav today, going to set them Friday night or Saturday morning. Luna will be pleased.
March Roos are all being jerks, they are going to be put in Eglu jail. Watched the Del, he waits till a hen is on a nest then drags her out or jumps on top. No wonder my egg count seems off. Golden blue maran wants everyone to respect his authority. And then the OE boys are trying to grab June babies for easy pickings. Don't think I'll keep any, maybe one of the June boys will be better. Main roo is looking frazzled from trying to keep up.

I think my girls are defying the odds... I have gotten one egg every day for the last 12 days from Frenchie and both of my sex links (they all have very distinct eggs). My Easter Egger who started laying on the 16th has only missed one day and all of her eggs have been constant in weight, overall size and color.

Going to sell some of my pears this weekend! Yay! Also sending some down to NYC to my family.

Canning preserves the fresh harvest for later use, either eating or in recipes depending on what it is. Check out Ball Blue Book or even Pinterest for recipes.
We do dill pickles, if tomatoes survive then spaghetti sauce. I always did freezer applesauce but want to try canning it. Zucchini relish, yum. May try to get over to Indian Creek Farm other side of Ithaca, they have a lot of u-pick peaches that I would like to try canning for pie/eating. That is also the location of Cummins Tree Nursery that was mentioned before.
I have a water bath canner if you ever want to borrow it! And sometimes your local Cooperative Extension or Boces will have canning classes. OCM Boces flyer this week had some this fall.

I'm 138 posts behind and can't catch up. Sorry.
Good news is Ms. B (former bumblefoot patient) wasn't killed by the mink a few months ago. Bad news is the bumblefoot is back. She was limping quite severely. I brought her in tonight and soaked her in epsom salt and warm water. I didn't need a blade. I was able to grab the black scab and pull it straight out. Part of the core, about 1/3" long was attached. Poor thing. Whoever says chickens don't react to pain like we do lies. I swear she was crying, curled her toes up and pulled her foot away. I could barely bandage her up. I put a good amount of drawing salve (ichthammol) on a piece of gauze and wrapped her up with vetrap. I hope it's enough to help the pain and start to heal again. I'll check her progress tomorrow.
Good nursing practice, huh?
