NY chicken lover!!!!

My kids go back to school Today YAY and hubby will be back to work on Saturday YAY so next week I might actually get some peace and quiet. Work is great I like college students not sure if I could handle teaching younger grades. I will also be part time at the Madison County OFA starting next week pretty excited about this as I am a big advocate for keeping the elderly home as long as possible so love being with an agency that is doing something to make that happen.

I have 2 hens that have went broody on me one is a blue orpington and the other is a black silkie who I got a nasty bruise from when I tried to pick her up as I didn't realize she was sitting on eggs I was worried their was something wrong with her well she certainately let me know real quick. She is in with a other silkies so I am going to have to don the gloves to put her in a dog crate as she is of course on the floor not in the nesting box and she lashes out at the others every time they get near her.

Well better get off here and get to bed I have to get up and get kids off to school then I will be doing the flock chores by myself as the helpers will all be in school

Morning!
Not sure what was going on with me last night, must have been tired or something....Woke up this morning to one of the magpie ducks out of the duck coop.

There's no way he could have escaped it either so he must not have been in there with the others last night when I went up there to lock them up and I just assumed he was. I've been waiting till dusk to lock them because they've been doing a good job of going to the run on their own and laying down inside. When I see them in there thats when I go up there to lock it up. They usually get all frantic and go inside the coop from there and then come back out into the run after I shut the door. So since there were no stray ducks in site outside the coop I locked them up. I don't know where Ferb was at that time but I found him hanging out down by the rabbit cages this morning. I'm shocked he made it thru the night without anything getting to him. But then again, that just goes to show how little predators I have around here I guess. Of course I then take the garbage down to the street this morning and I hear a pack of coyotes in the valley. All I could think of was Wow, not even a coyote wandered up here while he was out! All the ducks are out again this morning glad to have Ferb back with them.

Still no one interested in these two splash silkie cockerels. I really hope I can place them before winter, along with their little blue friend.

You can plan it ..Leave them in till you leave . Let them out when you get back .
Today I had to go to Wegmans ..for my prescriptions ..The flock stayed in till I got home ..my son was supposed to let them out at 3:00 .They stayed in today till almost 6:00 .
When I got home ..the roos gave me a welcome ..neighbor said they were totally quiet before that ..
They got out for 3 hours today ...They are safe & all alive though

I to am concerned since I expect migrating birds to be coming through. Not seen anything since I lost one in the spring. Black birds on white snow easy to spot. I am sorry for you loss Ke5.

My plan is to build more hoop runs to keep them in until I get home. Even a small run that adds space to the coop is better than nothing IMO. I don't expect my runs to be 100% protection but may just slow a predator down. Especially from the air. Which is all be impossible to do when you range. IMO anyhow.

Some of our big girls. 2 ee's 1 speckled sussex 1 brown leg horn 1 blue wyandotte and maybe the white frizzles. Everyone else gets to stay
How old are they ?

She was a bantam cochin. The big girls were a year old in June. The frizzles are just a few months old.

Ke, sorry for your loss.

I saw a coyote day before yesterday, just trotting through the yard. Yesterday I trotted out to the store and bought a 22. I know everyone is glad to hear that my just talking about it phase is over. And I have some ammo, so I'm ready to start the education and practice phase.

But am hoping to decrease the number of coyotes in this little area. They are way too comfortable here, they are bold, and need to move on, one way or another.

Hope everyone's kids have good years in school. Those first few days are so exciting, meeting everyone and getting settled into the new routine...even for the big kids away at college.

So in my depression from yesterday I forgot to ask to have the birds shrink wrapped...what is the best way to store them in the freezer without shrink wrapping them?
