NY chicken lover!!!!

Just went out to my rabbit cages in the front corner of my yard, every single duck and chicken was hanging out underneath them. I'm thinking they were pecking at the dropped food from the rabbits cages, nope! There was a hawk sitting on the power lines across the street. :-/. Wasn't very big. My BO hen was keeping an eye on it from under the shrubs over there. At least they're aware.

lordy, 2 days of not reading gets you behind here--sorry for the lost chickens everyone, glad to see new ones hatched, I may have the same problem getting rid of some roos-- yey, school is back in session--spent most of the day not home, but kept my little chicks locked up till I got back--I need to start walking and exercising. hope everyone has a good weekend!!--d.

Lynzi glad they were able to hide, it sounds like your roo is doing his job!

Things are simple here, though kind of not happy that I have to take Childrens Literature for my next class at school ugh I'm not happy. Can't let let my big coop free range there is a whole mess of cats breeding like crazy not much I can do but trap em and send them to the shelter. So I made a make shift run gonna make a more permanent one soon. Waiting for my tomatoes to rippen so I can make some sauce MMMMMMMM

7 out of 11 chicks so far.

Life lesson, just because 11 eggs fit in there, does not mean that all the chicks can stand once hatched. I had to open the bator to remove some chicks. One of the 7 hatched with a foot that was closed, balled and looked bad. I went to work, waited and it's toes are flat now but it's main joint is still large. I may need to bandage it flat tomorrow but I am hoping that nature continues to take it's course with it.

This breeding is from my Dark Brahma Roo over my various females. All three from Frenchie, the Barred Rock hen I got from Lynzi look like baby barred rocks, identical markings on all three, with feathered feet. The long leghorn egg that hatched so far looks like a leghorn with bare feet. Of the three Red Sex Link eggs that hatched so far one is white/yellow with feathered feet, the other two are dark and look more like my Dark Brahma did when I brought him home.

I'm debating which chicks I should put outside with Pearl. She wants babies so bad. She's still sitting on some duds that I need to remove before they explode.

so sorry to read about the loss of your little cochin to an aerial predator. Every now and again I let my 3 youngsters out to free range for a half hour or hour before I put them in the 2nd smaller pen. I must go to the window every 5 minutes to check them -- I'm so on edge! I don't know how you free-rangers do it! I love seeing them wandering in the yard, though, and they do enjoy the freedom! I notice they stick very close to the coop and tend to move around it, but not very far from it.

Tonight I was fussing a little over the big drop in the temperature (predicted). I have been leaving the coop door open (there's a screen door for protection) most of the summer. Tonight, I closed it, along with the big window. I only have the smaller window open a few inches for ventilation. Hopefully, the girls are starting to acclimate to cooler nights.

Breella,

Congrat's on your brand new chicks. I know you were worried about the hatch! They're cute.

Good luck with the little one with foot problems.

I know what you mean about the drop in temp tonight. I had to bring in all my plants and that wasn't easy. I think that I got a frew extra some how this summer and the rest grew. Especially my banana tree. It is already taller then my ceilings. If it gets much taller I'm not sure what I'll do. I can't make them any taller. Anyway I closed up the coop windows too. I know that they will be find, but it hasn't been this cool in a while and then it is going to warm up again. I just don't want the temp tonight to shock their sysrtem.

We are suppose to get to the low 40s or high 30s. I covered my veggies that I could.....it's a little red neck looking but it works

I didn't close up the door or put the flaps down on the sides. It will be the coolest night we have had so far but everyone is fluffed up and snuggling together & toasty warm under their feathers. Even Red who is going thru a molt and looks horribly is toasty warm. She sandwiched herself btw her 2 biggest sisters. The big girls have been thru winter before & the tots I'm sure will be just fine. They pant when its warm so I am sure they will welcome the cooler nights...........it's suppose to be in the 80s again by next week
