ke ...

so sorry to read about the loss of your little cochin to an aerial predator. Every now and again I let my 3 youngsters out to free range for a half hour or hour before I put them in the 2nd smaller pen. I must go to the window every 5 minutes to check them -- I'm so on edge! I don't know how you free-rangers do it! I love seeing them wandering in the yard, though, and they do enjoy the freedom! I notice they stick very close to the coop and tend to move around it, but not very far from it.

Tonight I was fussing a little over the big drop in the temperature (predicted). I have been leaving the coop door open (there's a screen door for protection) most of the summer. Tonight, I closed it, along with the big window. I only have the smaller window open a few inches for ventilation. Hopefully, the girls are starting to acclimate to cooler nights.

TOB
I have my ear listening for bad chicken sounds ..& I check every once in awhile & walk around our property
Or I just do stuff outside when they are out ..Weed wack..pull out weeds , Plant stuff , cultivate , Rake grass , collect dead wood , etc
You could also wash the car or vac out the car
Today was Predator day ..I guess
I think it may have been a bird / Hawk ? that got my baby roo last time ..
I was in the garden out back ..babies at the front of the house ..made a bad noise ...Roo & flock made another noise in the back where I was ..
I ran out front ..where they were ...No babies to be seen ...No Predators either... I doubled back & one of them made a small cluck to me .
They where all safely hiding in the tall weeds next to the stream ..they gradually came out as I talked to them
But they stayed close to the weeds as they ranged .
I had forgotten that I saw 3 or 4 hawks ? earlier in the day come over my property lower than normal ..
Hate those things ..I wish I was super Stretch & could reach up & grab them ..& pluck them out of the sky
Earlier that mangy fox was in the field behind our house ..with its nose in the Ground hog hole ..
It was shot at ..dont think we got it ..I am sure we will see it again ..it is brave always coming out during the day .

No sound or movement from the four eggs that are still in the incubator. I'm going to give them a couple of days before I call them quits. They had been alive just a few days ago... though 7 out of 11 is better than none.

Nutty - Thanks he's doing so well. Today I had to work late till 9 and he had everything done except getting eggs LOL but I'm not too worry about that all the chickens were counted and locked up. The cats and dogs were all fed and taken care of. He got himself his dinner played hide and seek with friends and of course when I got home he had our pit mix sitting with him on the couch. Our neighbor even gave him some chicken magazines!! I tell ya when done right animals can really teach kids responsibility!

With that said he did get the eggs when I got home so no issue there. It's hard now that we have a roo We have to remember to get the eggs and in the frig. I'm so use to leaving them out because we eat them within two weeks. Love our roo though he sure keeps the lady's inline and makes sures everyone gets their share of treats and food. Iove how he watches everyone one eat as he takes a very small bite and continues to watch over them. Though my barred rock has been picking on him she is not ready to share her thrown as top hen, she is like half his size. LOL It's better now but I was angry when I saw her rip out two tail feathers. I love my boy even though he's scared of us he hides behind the girls at night when we check in on them but once you pick him up he calms down.

Well Good night gotta some homework to finish and a hip to nurse I felt good today and ran hard and I feel it LOL.

8 quarts and 1 pint of peach pie filling canned up, and the pot scrapings eaten over ice cream. Yum! Recipe I found through Pinterest, on simplycanning.com. Bought the Clear-Jel on Amazon from Berry Farms. Also made single batch of peach freezer jam, using the Mrs Wages mix. Little girl and I picked more peaches this morning, so will be canning and freezing those for eating tomorrow. And maybe another half-batch of pie filling, just because it is good.
Hubby talked to a friend that had 4-H chickens at the fair. He mentioned that we heard about illness. Fair was trying to keep it quiet, understandable with the number of people. Her birds are ok, they were housed upstairs. It was ILT ( infectious Laryngotracheitis), many birds died. I know nothing about it, but it sounds bad.

That is normal for a roo not raised by you ..mine is similar ..he was a year when we got him .
He doesnt like to be touched or picked up . He gives us plenty of room when we are near him .
Roos I have raised & touched & picked up dont seem to mind me picking them up as much .
My 4 month old ones ( samatras ) I have picked them up more than the rest of the roos & talked to them .

Eggs that are fertilized are the same as un fertilized ones .
We leave them out most of the day ..before we frig them

8 out of 11. Yesterday shortly after my post one of the eggs started talking to me. It was the chick who had the internal pip on hatch day and that I thought had died. It's voice was weak as I left for dinner with my Fiancee. When we got back I was surprised to find the chick in the egg still alive. I decided to intervene because from the look of the candling this kid was not only malpositioned, but the peeps were short and not as energetic as they had been.

No wonder the kid couldn't get out! I tried to drill a small hole in the egg so she could get more O2, but I couldn't make a hole! This egg was thick! I tried several times and finally spotting a spoon on the counter I gave the egg one hard wack in the air cell area. Once I started peeling the egg away I could see that Derpys head was nowhere near the air cell (I wasn't expecting it to be so far away, since she had an internal pip up there. The outter membrane was very thick and the inner had begun to shrink wrap. She must have rotated to zip and went the wrong way then got stuck. I opened the egg until I found her beak, which had no egg tooth. Not sure if she wore it out trying to get out from that crappy angle or if it's just a defect. I had to be careful, this chick still had veins on the inner membrane so rather than cut her out fully I decided to put her back in the incubator. (unless you are prepared to see a chick bleed to death I do not recommend assisting any chick out of an egg. Had I nicked one of those delicate veins with either eggshell or my tools I could have killed Derpy myself. I knew the risks and knew that Derp had zero chance to live if I didn't help and was and still am prepared to euthanize her if she can't thrive or if something is seriously wrong. I have a curious mind when it comes to animals and had to see what was wrong with her.)

They say breaking out of the egg is a test of strength. Derpy took a few drops of water off of a syringe from me and I left her to go rest. Around midnight I went back to see that raising the humidity in the incubator helped a lot. Derpy's veins had disappeared for the most part and she pushed a bit more of her head out. I removed a bit more of still tough outer membrane and gave her some more water which she readily licked from the syringe's head and left her until morning.

5:45 had me finding miss Derpy flopping around outside the egg. Her beak has aligned (it looked cross beak as she tried to escape the egg) but her legs do not look fully right, almost as if they haven't developed fully and she has one wing that is smaller than the other. I laid out some moist paper towels on the wire mesh of my incubator and left her inside. Hopefully some time rolling around in there will strengthen her legs a little more.
