That is normal for a roo not raised by you ..mine is similar ..he was a year when we got him .
He doesnt like to be touched or picked up . He gives us plenty of room when we are near him .
Roos I have raised & touched & picked up dont seem to mind me picking them up as much .
My 4 month old ones ( samatras ) I have picked them up more than the rest of the roos & talked to them .

Eggs that are fertilized are the same as un fertilized ones .
We leave them out most of the day ..before we frig them

Yeah that's what we figured we are just making sure we can catch him to do our weekly inspection of the flock. So far no problems. He's doing exactly what we want, though!

I finally got the big girls sold last night including the partridge mutts. I'm still left with the partridge mutt roo and a quad of white frizzle cochins that still need to go. I was strange to walk into the coop last night and not have to count as many heads.

Morning Everyone,
It's finally the weekend and we have no plans!

I'm contemplating whether or not I want to make my own "trailer" for the silkie coop to sit up on. Something that I can get it up off the ground on but portable and easy to move. Thought about going to Lowes and buying some wheels that have the mounts on them to be screwed onto a piece of wood. This way when I move it to another place in the grass the only spots that will go bare are the spots where the wheels are sitting. How hard could it be to make one myself?

Breella ~ Congrats on the hatch! Wow, 8 out of 11! I placed another bunch last weekend and not sure they are going to do all that great. some of the eggs looked really porous. What did you do as far as humidity goes? Were these hatched out of your homemade incubator or a different one?

I too still have chickens to go.

Marq is coming in a hour for the two BM youngsters. I still have the three frizzle youngsters to go. I also have an EE pullet too. Black but nice. Lord only knows what the three new chicks are. Hopefully pullets frizzled or not.

I may have to take them to the auction. I hate to make the drive as they don't bring even enough to cover the gas.

I tried to get some work done but didn't pay attention to the weather report so it's raining. I did manage to get supports up under the new clear plastic panels though.

and I've replaced the plastic on the back hoop coop. I spread it out a bit to the sides and planted mint under it. Hopefully some of it will take. Mints are very invasive so there are plenty of roots. I may live to regret it, but I'm old so how long can that be?

Derpy is still hanging on. Not sure if when I posted it was in or out but Derp has made it out of the egg and is hanging out in the incubator. Legs are pale and do not seem to support it well. I want to give this chick a fighting chance before I decide to euthanize it. Can someone give me suggestions on helping it stand? Maybe the leg bandaging and cup thing someone mentioned a few pages back?

Once he's completely dried if he's still having trouble I would try the rubber band trick I tried with my chick. I didn't do it until he was out of the incubator though. You can use anything as long as it keeps the legs the right distance apart when it's standing up-a string, twist tie, rubber band. I would try these things before using a bandaid because they keep the legs free and flexible where as the bandaid keeps them stiff, not allowing the chick the walk. And this is the whole purpose, is trying to get the chick to walk.

Oh and I never ended up using the bowl part of this trick. Worked out really well without one.

All finished with my platform for my silkie coop! I ended up going with 2 wheels to put under one end and since I have all this wood left over from other projects I used that for legs on the other end to keep it stationed and not rolling around around. Now if I can only find a level spot in my yard for it! LOL I was thinking of moving this to up against the house, along side my laundry room windows where I used to keep the rabbit cages in winter. Only because it has some overhang from the roof to keep snow off of it. Is that bad to keep it up against the house like that? I've read before that some towns have ordinances for chicken keeping that require you to keep your chickens a certain amount of distance away from your house. This part of my house is the furthest in the back, not like it's near my front door, side door, basement hatchway, etc. Is something that is ok to do?

What are your local ordinances?? Personally, I wouldn't put the hen-house right next to the house, but to each their own. Since it's on wheels, if the locals give you trouble, simply move the hens further away and what they can't see won't bother them - right?
