Has anyone see these? Solar Powered Motion Lights? I was thinking of getting two for the coop.

Also, anyone have any experience with having a baby monitor in the chicken coop? A friend of mine suggested I try it to see if Duane is REALLY crowing at night/early AM (I honestly don't hear him crow before 5-6am.)

Skip the lights if you DON'T want your rooster crowing at all hours. I'm sure you could borrow a baby monitor, or find a decent one in a second-hand kids store.
My EE roo has been known to crow at 3am, part of the reason we have the AC running every night, to drown out the crowing. And he crows all day, especially being locked up. Seen on Craigslist an ad for a chicken processor between Maine and Endicott, which wouldn't be a bad drive for us. And they offer to teach you to process your own. Maybe I'll get the 4 processed for ourselves this time, rather than give away to the Amish. One OE boy has been well behaved since his 3 buddies are locked up.

Did you happen to notice his name ? Is he the only policeman that comes to your house ?
Coz when there is a complaint ...the same policeman rarely comes again ...
I will bet he lives in your neighborhood . If you can get his name ..I could try to find out if he does ?
My roo sometimes crows at 4:30 ...I dont notice it unless I am still up or trying to get to sleep at that time ..Im a night owl ...

I love the light because I can see when I'm down at the coop and you can take it off and use it as a flashlight and switch the settings. As far as the crowing I don't think that will help. Good luck with everything. If moving is best for you then I hope you find a great place.

Hello everyone, I am in Hartland NY! I have a variety of breeds 30 with 2 roosters. Also 10 ducks (5 Roan, 5Pekin). This is my second year having birds and I love having them they are a lot of fun !

Welcome

yeah, just YOU saying you don't hear him crowing will hold no weight - they will think you are just making it up .....

the 10 complaints - all from the same person ? and did they call come in in 2 frickin days? Why weren't you told after the first complaint so you could assess the situation and see if there were an easy way for you to handle it.

it really does sound fishy and NO - any PC can change the zoning if the people living in the county speak up as a group !!!! YOU are still in a democracy !

We are right now changing our zoning map and considering doing away with the commercial zone completely !!!! Don't be silent ! Stress being resiliant and strong and able to feed your neighbor's during storm events .... :)

Quote: I like the light as well to illuminate the coop area for evening chores. I will have to look further,

I know of people who have used baby monitors in their coops with great success. Just make sure the range is long enough to reach from the coop to the house.

And here are some fun lights

Welcome to those who have just joined the flock. I'm loving how many folks we have in pretty close proximity, makes me feel like the stuff Brella was going through has to turn out ok because we are strong. And cause Brella handled it well...

Tab, how about stashing a folding chair under a tree in view of the road? Just for a couple of weeks? But you might enjoy it after the baby comes too. Must have been scary slipping like that. But the worst of the heat may be over. I hope.

I'm moving more slowly lately and have been leaving cheep duty for DH. Our barn has cement floors so the temps down there aren't as bad as outside. The only standing out in the heat I have to do is waiting for the bus to drop off Fiona from school. Yesterday it came early and I was avoiding the heat as long as possible. I slipped in the mud in the front yard trying to get in sight so they would let her off and didn't make it. I had to tail the bus to a neighbors house to get her. Scared me, my house sets back off the road with trees blocking a lot of the view.
The chair is a good idea. Also, carry your cell phone around. I hate to carry mine around all the time, but sometimes it is in your best interest.

Seems to me there is an agenda here, seeing that HE has looked to find a new home for your rooster. The threat of court and fines, in spite of the fact you have documentation that you are legal also makes me thing HE's the one behind this. Or at least is priviy to who is and is being specifically sent.

What did he say when you said you'd been to the town and are legal?

I agree with Rancher : It is mighty suspicious... that HE has looked to find a new home for your rooster.

Keep in mind that maybe he does care and is trying to do what is best for everyone, he may not be, but he could be. Not all cops are bad......

gotta say, my rooster will start at 5 am in the morning but never heard him at night---don't you have the right to face your accuser and what are the laws in your area?? does it say you can't have a rooster?

The only reason I know my roos crow at that time is I get up to go. Lately however I have not noticed them crowing that early since it's getting light out later and later. I agree he may live in your neighborhood.
Regardless of what he says, there is a record of WHO is complaining. I know for a fact that your so called anonymous calls to other places are NOT kept private. I called child protective about my sister and was told she would know it was me who called.

But like I said, if you fight and win you have your roo, if you lose you're no worse off. You are on the side of right since you're legally allowed to have the roo.

My neighbor got all miffed cuz I wouldn't side with him about the ESM band practices on a Sunday. The guy is a major pain. He has a sign says no turn around yet has his bathtub Mary in the yard. I wonder what he thinks Mary would think of his ungracious attitude!

Some neighbors want to run the neighborhood. It's really about power and control.

These rual/city folks battles are going on every where as more city minded people move into rural areas. As more and more farm land is sold to housing developers and build right in the middle of agri zoned areas.

My guess is your house was built much earlier than your neighbors and were built under a different zoning. This may be in order to get the necessary paperwork to build at all.

What are those of us, in RA zoning to do? Sell and move on?

This is where publications such as Back Yard Poultry come in. There have been some very good articles on zoning laws and land rights. Imagine buying acres of land only to find out that the previous owner sold the mineral and water rights to a Gas company and now here they come to claim their rights? In one case the neighbor had been given the right to cross the land to fish in the pond.

Suppose you get a dog? Then what, along comes officer pita and says hey I don't like your dog you need to get rid of him.

My brother was harassed and the dog warden came and sat in front of his house only to find the dog hadn't barked all day. The neighbor was just a pain and trouble maker.

You need to get a copy of City Chicks. You can get it at the public library if you would rather not buy it.
