NY chicken lover!!!!

Breella - sounds like some positive things coming from your neighbors! Did you ever find out if in fact that cop lives close by? Now I'm really curious as to who is making the complaints.

I have not found out if it is him or not. A neighbor made a suggestion on who they think is complaining, but their yard doesn't border mine and the sound would be very minimal there.

The maps still overlay the old railroads. I'm a good size lot for the area (half acre) and the only RA zoned lot within three blocks (but there are others!) Hopefully the property we are trying to buy comes through for us soon so we can leave suburbanhell.

Finally got rid of one splash silkie and the 4-toed blue silkie today. I'm going to hold onto the 2nd splash just a little while longer to see if it ends up being a hen or roo. I was about 90% sure on the other one. Those red/maroon spots under it's beak were just yelling roo at me. And now they're crest feathers are in nicely, that one had some streamers pointing out the back of it's crest. This one I have now I'm just a little iffy on that it might just be a hen. They're turning out so nicely I'd hate to give them both up and find out later it was a hen. It was a friend of my friend who took them. So I can always ask her what the other one ended up being.

Went to O'neills again today as well as Navarino Orchard. So far I'm liking the fritters from O'neill's the best. They are the closest to the ones I'm used to back home. Tomorrow DH and I are making fritters ourselves the way WE are used to having them, since we won't make it to CT for the Apple Harvest Festival that we grew up going to.

Glad the sun finally came out today. Everything is still damp here but at least it's not raining. Hoping to get to Lowes tomorrow since I never made it there Thursday evening.

So glad that the rain stopped for today. Everything is still so wet. We did get out today so that I could clean out the coop . I want to scrub it for winter, but with the run being so wet, I don't want to add more water. I did get my "Duck Hut" made today. I only needed some help from the hubby with the tin for the roof. I still have some finishing touches to do tomorrow. I need to add insulation and fix the door, but it is looking nice. I also want to give it a good coat of paint too. Then all it needs is some straw. I think the boys will love it. I thought about putting them in it tonight, but we are supposed to get frost and I don't want them to get to cold, so they are in the coop for one more night.

Breella not to sound mean but if your neighbors are calling the cops it's because they don't have the nerve to confront you so when you confront them they are going to lie and say they don't have a problem with your roo. As far as the other property if the person already has a right away or has been haying it for a certain number of years if I recall correctly it is 7 yrs and they can prove it their is nothing you can do to stop them you buy the property with the right away. I knows cause when we purchased our property their was a right away for a logging rd for the property owners behind us to get back to their property for logging they eventually sold the property to someone who built a camp way back in and at that time I talked to a lawyer cause my deed said it was a right away to the one person for logging not the new owner to get back to their camp and was told that didn't matter the right away transferred didnt matter what the use was I eventually got lucky they let the property go for back taxes and I purchased it so the right away is null and void now as I have had the property combined with mine . So you might be stuck I guess you really need to have a lawyer search the deed for you and find out how long the guy has been haying the fields. I hope it works out and he doesn't have a right away then I would approach him and make some deal with him to let him continue to use it and you get something out of the deal too.

I am still sick and feel like garbage. Thank you for the well wishes everyone.

I have a question about winter do you keep the birds inside or can the go out in the snow I have heard they can go out but want to make sure

All this talk of building has gotten me sad, I hurt my hip on monday and it's been raining so nothing done yet hopefully this weekend. Got a shed to get started and a run to finish, now that the wonderful hawk moved in, it scared my son so he went outside running to find things okay thankfully, gotta a good roo on my hands. I put wire over the birds and made a make shift fence for outside. I gotta get that run done it just needs the wire the frame is done LOL. Then the rabbit hutch I was given I need to make into a tractor for the silkies so I can take them out the other tractor they are in and use it for sick bay and quarentine so they are able to get on some grass and weeds, for a better recovery. Well got some homework to get done.

I hope the evening finds everyone well. Love the all pictures.
I hope your hip is feeling better

Ive got a hawk around us too . I heard the chickens making a distress sound ..they are in the run ..thurs ..I look out a hawk is trying to roost in our garden .
I open the back door ...it flys over my head ..Im on the deck ..I yell get out of here ..I go out to soothe the chickens ...they are still in distress
I turn around it has roosted on the tree next to our house ..Go in the house ..ask my hubby is there anything I can throw at it ? hes like no ...
So I said I can throw Rocks ...I go out to the other side of the house ...armed with rocks ..its gone ..

Breella, that is a good letter. I like the suggestions others have made and wonder if mentioning that since you are in the old homestead that you are zoned for agriculture, or whether that would cause more trouble. Or perhaps saying ?have checked with the town and I am able to have ... Just a little more explanation than before.

Is this a time when My year and maybe a half old rooster should be molting? He has been pretty ugly due to some unhappy hen (could it be a love polygon?) but he has lost even more feathers so I feared he would morph from his current rump less look to a naked neck rump less Speckled Sussex. He does seem to be getting new head and neck feathers, if those girls would keep their beaks off him.
I have a hen & a rooster moulting right now ...

Hi , I hope your feeling a little better ...
Yes birds can go out in the snow ..some do not want to ..others dont care if their out ..I usually shovel a path with a little grass sticking out of it ..to tempt them out .
they will go out on the paths ....under the trees & under my deck .. it is warmer under there and they can dust bathe all year under there if they want to ...

Mine have always liked to out once the storm is over - they have food and water and shelter from the wind in their run - but I open the door and let them decide .... as you can see - there is no coop in sight ... they wondered all around this cold day - and then back in at night. Some went further - and I think one EE stayed in the coop. I like to offer them the choice - I think it keeps them healthier when they can roam and eat the odd thing or two and happier.
