NY chicken lover!!!!

Well got home and candled the chicks that piped internal. Only one had movement it started zipping and I took top of shell off once it was almost all way around. This thing is soaked. I opened the other two eggs that piped internal today and they was dead kinda wet with beat barly through air sac. I think they drowned even though I see no running water when I move them.

I candled on day 7 then like half the eggs on day 10 and that was it till the end.

I ended up with one clear egg no veins, 1 shrink wrap from getting chicks out, one quitter looks like before lockdown, and these two i'll say drowned chicks. So I ended up with a 87.5% hatch rate this time just hope they all make it and can sell them. I'll be happy if I can keep at around that hatch rate the 50% or so wasn't fun to watch hatch.

I'll tell you one thing. THIS ROO IS THE MAN!!. True he only has 9 girls but only 2 unfertile eggs out of 41 I started with. Told wife we are keeping him for awhile lol.

I'll have to post some pics of chicks from this batch and the ones I hatched last month. The ones from last month are changing colors one black one is now a blue or lav looking I think.

well off to bed later all

Well, I read about the illness and deaths of the dogs last night and had no words of comfort. I was the kid who would watch westerns on TV and see the cowboys and Indians slaughtered with no reaction, but would tear up when a horse was injured. Animals are the best. I am so sorry for all who are grieving.

On the subject of kids...people should only have them if they want them and can do a good job raising them to be good people. That means teaching right from wrong, disciplining, enriching their experiences, loving them unconditionally, advocating for them, comforting them...it is truly a lifetimes work, people are wise to make it a choice. No problem if the decision is to put the energy elsewhere, we can only do so much in this life.

I'm also sorry for the loss of Tabs relatives chickens, so sad. Hope the ones you have so kindly shared with them will be safe. And I'm glad you have been so successful in getting that baby to wait. Good job, Mom! Isn't it hard to do less than you are used to. I had one year when I was put on bed rest, and that year I didn't have a baby, I had a quilt. But then the next time went better and I had a great kid...so glad I have the ones I do. They are grown and live not too far, and also not too close. It's all good, I like the people the are.

Looks like a week of great weather ahead, hope to get lots done. Just got a pressure canner...I wonder what to can first?

Jlaw What breeds are all your chicks ?? That's a lot of babies ! Congratlations

OMG this made me giggle a lot

http://www.everythingfarm-blog.com/chicken-diapers-latest-urban-farming-trend/

I'm all for urban farming but really? LOL

This also made me think of Lynzi and her dilemma with the kids and her having to change shoes because of the chicken poo. Return your fencing and get this instead, just kidding.

But I guess to each his own right

Too funny. I have seen them before and I laughed then too. I'm trying to get out of the diaper stage I definitly don't want to start again!

I have 7 production reds, 1 white leghorn, 1 light Sussex hens. My roo is a blue Ameraucana. So just making EE's for now in a few years I may set on a breed. I like my barred rocks just let them out for first time and they let me pick them up no problem even though I have never handled them before.
