NY chicken lover!!!!

Here are the two EE that hatched. The 3 eggs next to them have yet to pip. Found the maran pullet egg off to the side, cold. Hoping to get another 1 or 2 out of this hatch. The other egg was partially hatched then crushed, beautiful speckled egg. Chick was black with yellow flecks, although still wet. That was the one found cold last weekend too. Hoping to get something more! Although Luna is a dedicated broody and good mom, she is a klutz with the eggs obviously. Maybe next time we let her set a couple weeks then find day-old chicks to stick under her. Her hatch rate is terrible!

How Cute they are!

Well since I've sampled 3 orchards' apple fritters and none are like back home in CT, I decided to make my own for dinner - Yes, dinner! I may not cook but I can bake when there is something I reallllllllly want to make! This my friends, is how a Southington, CT Apple Harvest Festival Apple Fritter is made....

Yummm!

Stony,

The mama duck has such a lovely apricot color to her feathers...very pretty.

Tab,

sorry about your cousin's chickens getting killed. I feel badly for the kids. It was nice of you to share some of yours. Seems like there are a lot of dog attacks on chickens.

Lynzi,

Ohhhhhhhh boy! The recipe for fritters sounds heavenly! I will give it a go soon. Lots of apples here. THANKS.

On (human) kids....

I took my sweet time having my two boys. We intentionally waited over 5 years into marriage before we took the plunge. By then, I was as ready as I ever would be, but it was still a scary leap. Parenting should be taken seriously; knowing yourself well and honestly enough to realize you don't want to have kids is fair enough. My brother made that choice; he is a fun uncle to my two boys. Too bad there aren't more people who take the choice seriously and give it the consideration it merits. That being said, I can't imagine not being a mom. Who would have known all those years ago that I would actually be a good one now that I'm almost 16 years into the role!

On (canine) kids....

We have learned that our incredibly sweet, silly and lovable 5 year old pit-mix has terminal lymphoma. I am just heartbroken. Life is definitely NOT fair. We are trying to enjoy the time we have left, but it's an aggressive cancer and I don't think we will have him too long.

We will not let him suffer and have braced the kids. Right now, Prednisone therapy has given him a little remission. He is doing OK for now. Having animals my entire life, I have to say Merlin is the sweetest dog I've ever had. There will be a huge hole left when it's time to say good-bye. (For anyone considering pits or pit crosses, we have two and they are AWESOME with all kids.)

I am sorry about the dog! I do have to agree that Pitt that was dropped off here is a very good dog.

TOB--I'm so sorry about Merlin. So sad.

Metella-- Lorelei is nice. I didn't realize Bella from twilight was short for Isabella. I think we mentioned Isabelle as a possibility, but that is too close to the twilight name. DH likes the popular names and I like the more individuality.

Being a parent is not always easy and is a lot of work. It has its pluses and minuses, but when I look at my girls I wouldn't have it any other way. My sister doesn't ever want kids of her own but she loves mine. She likes being able to spend time with them then send them home. That's enough for her. Knowing my girls I understand and respect her decision (same with anyone else's choice). What bothers me is when people keep having kids they don't want just to get more government aid that they don't actually use on the kids. Children are a responsibility not to be taken lightly.
Grandbaby number 2 is Aleona and number 3 is Addelynn my daughter likes the uncommon names too.

I understand your loss and am sorry to hear. We lost our Chuck yesterday morning. He had been sick along with the other 2 dogs after someone recommended we switch to Purina Pro Plan. He was the only one that never fully recovered. His organs were just shutting down.
I've heard that one something dies another is born, and we had a silkie chick hatch today, so Danielle was a little happier.

So sorry about your loss! The little silkie is adorable

How Cute they are!

And it is still only the 2 EE chicks out of 15 eggs. Last night found another egg completely swished flat, chick and all. Pulled the remaining 2 eggs out, as by this time they will not hatch. She is definitely not getting more eggs, only chicks from this point forward. The 4 June chicks are looking good, wellie roo is getting all his colors in. If anyone wants him or the partridge rock roo, let me know. Otherwise they may make the trip to the processor too. The 2 of them will fit in the crock pot hot tub together.

Sorry about the cats ... I also have burial sites - I mark mine with daffodils and other types of flowers that last a long time.

Hawks are all over now ! Had to chase my own off - and it was swooping for a while even with me there ....

All it got was a claw full of feathers from a roo I am going to cull - at least it shook up the girls so they may be more alert until I can get the hoop coop finished ... they have a secure coop in an open poultry net right now - NOT my idea of the best .... but rebuilding the barn after the fire has been a trial .... Pyxis is planning to come over and help with finishing the hoop coop !!! Go NY thread - you guys are the best.

My chickens love, love, love tomato's. they are enjoying my cleaning up the garden.

I learned something new today. Cats can be allergic to foods with fish in it and should not have it often. What hogwash is that? I had to have 2 older cats put to sleep today. They both had cancerous tumor s. it's a very sad day at our house. We planted them in my flower garden.

My neighbors saw a hawk swoop down in the chicken pen today. Thankfully, no one is missing.

I have 4 cats and will be sad when they pass on. They are my furry kids/
Glad to hear the hawk came up empty taloned.

Quote: So sorry to hear about the poor hatch rate
