NY chicken lover!!!!

rancher, if you get the same wheelbarrow, you already have lots of spare parts... like the tire... to keep you going for a long time. I had to get a new tire this year too..

Mine is an older model but there may be one with the same tire. I trashed picked this out of the woods after we moved in. Doofus (previous owner) just threw stuff into the woods. Lot's of steel poles and chain link. I found an old metal clothes pole, pool cover, and junk. I also have an old chain link gate. Must be six feet high and heavy as you know what. I'd have to rent a truck to take in to the recycle place.

Coops are all cleaned! Everyone's happy. Now if only they'd show me some appreciation by laying some eggs!

I've been getting a phone call a day from some telemarketer trying to save me money on my electric bill. We just got a new phone number yet again because we switched phone companies and I cannot stand all the stupid calls. If our cell phones worked here then I wouldn't even have a home phone but in order to make/receive a phone call I have to go out on my porch. What kills me is the minute these people get on the phone with you they're like "Do you have an electric bill? Can you give me the account number?" I'm sorry, you haven't given me your name, the company you work for, but yes, let me give you my electric bill account number! Ugh! Such idiots!

Repeat after me, "I don't do business over the phone, I don't do business over the phone, I don't do business over the phone, call me again and I'll hunt you down and kill you, oops, I don't do business over the phone.

Well, the little EE that lost her eye and part of her face is doing okay. Subdued, but I would be too if that happened to me. Still eating and drinking, and the wound has scabbed over, which is a good sign. I'm working on devising a little eye patch for her - the one I tried today she didn't like and scratched right off, so we'll try again tomorrow. She's doing a weird thing when eating now, and I think it's because she can't see out of that side of her head now - she's doing some weird head tilting while trying to eat and find food. Hopefully she's young enough that she can learn to compensate.

Pyxis,

That is a brutal looking wound, but I would venture to say if she's eating and drinking maybe it looks worse than it feels. Just hope you can keep her on the mend and infection free. The head tilting you mention...this is what my Brabanter does (she has partial blindness) when she's trying to hone in on scratch seeds, etc. It was more pronounced when the eye issue was new. She still does it, but not in the exaggerated way she used to. Good luck getting your bird back up to speed. Kudos for trying and giving her the chance.

Glad to hear she is doing well. If you fashion an eye patch that works you might want to patent it.....it could be a best seller :)

I'm sure it will take some time for her to get used to eating one eyed. But being young I think will help her cope

All four of my brooder chicks have rock solid crops. The only thing I could think of is that maybe they got into the scratch I put out. If it was the scratch will it go down on it's own or do I need to flush them?

We are in Cohoes. Anyone else in the (518) area code? My wife and I are just starting out and would love to talk coop design and placement. If possible, we would really like to take a tour of local coops already established. Please email and we will set something up.

Why would you feed chick feed to laying hens?

I picked up a bag of the Nutrena Feather Fixer, It's pellets. Plus they gave me another coupon.

I feed the entire flock, Dumor chick grower cuz it's 20% protein and I can 't guarantee that the younger birds won't eat the layer pellets. While it is crumbles I mix it with water to make a mush and reduce waste. I sometimes put ACV or Probiotics in the water too.

After the young girls are laying I'll ease them back to layer pellets.
