That video is great! I am impressed that Mercedes Benz is using chickens for their ads...we are coming up in the world! Not Chevy and Ford anymore!

Oh, I think that the first winter the girls are more likely to lay than the second and successive winters. So, it's good to keep getting chicks each year, right?
Its good to keep getting more if you have the room! LOLOh, I think that the first winter the girls are more likely to lay than the second and successive winters. So, it's good to keep getting chicks each year, right?
I too am "limited" on the amount we should have...not by the town or ordinances by any means, but just the fact that we do not own this property and the gentleman leasing it to us was generous enough to allow us to have a few. I know he probably be fine with what I have and how they are set up but I already feel like I'm over my "limit" LOLMy girls had just started laying last December so they should be fine this winter. I
have heard that people replace them every year but I am limited to the amount I can have so I cant do that.
I sell my eggs & supply myself & my Mom with what the hens lay. I know of others who have 3 & 4 year old hens that still lay. They just let them take their natural breaks and don't provide extra lighting and the hens keep laying for years & years. That is what I am hoping for with my hens as well
Today was the first time that I saw it intact. I've found 6 total over the last week, but they were all empty and starting to dry out except this one so I'm guessing that the girls had eaten them. I have 10 hens, 8 are already laying and have benn for a while the last 2 are the blue maran and the bantam that I have. These eggs are larger in size so unless my bantam is laying full size eggs I'm sure that it is the other maran that is of age. I usually go out just before lunch to get the eggs and this one was there when I went out to let them out of the coop. All but 1 have been on the floor. If they are just starting to lay its not unusual to get shell less or soft eggs. How many have you gotten? Over what period of time? Maybe there is more than one trying to lay? Just keep an eye on them. Between the layer feed & oyster shell they have access to enough calcium. Its just their system trying to get used to laying eggs.
