NY chicken lover!!!!

LuvMyChicks1491-Great sum up. haha

All summer we kept getting stung but couldn't see why. After the leaves left, we saw why. Different lenses on my camera shows it a little differently.

wasps and hornets----yucky, get someone to take care of it if your not into doing it.

Yeah, ticks are bad here too. I have a friend who lives in the woods on the other side of town who has had 6deer ticks in the space of a week or a week and a half. Still with scabs at the same time. I've had two in about four days, just crawling, and my dog had one at least, poor thing.
Your poor horse!

I may try the FF this year. I seem to be buying feed all the time.

Quote: That is exactly the problem. If you feed only fermented grains, you will leave out important nutrients that processed feed has. Years ago I went to the all grains method. I also had in each coop a bucket with fish meal, calcium, and a vitamin mix. The theory was, that it most mimicked what a bird eats naturally free ranging and each bird will eat out of the "protein bucket" what its needs are. . What I found was, they really love the whole grains, but didn't eat much from the protein bucket, so egg production was not very good. When you think about it, birds in nature, only lay eggs seasonally. If we did not supplement with more protein, probably no one would keep chickens because it would be #1, hard to keep them alive in the winter, #2, supplementing them is costly for the amount of eggs produced..

I also found, when I first tried grains, and I mixed oats, corn & wheat, that they picked out the corn first, and they maybe ate the rest. Corn has the lowest % of protein, so that inn itself was a deterant.

Ideally, we would all just let our chickens free range without supplementing their diet. I for one, would be out of chickens faster than I could say "free range", not only because they would die in the cold months, but they would all be eaten by predators....now I'm asking myself, why do I have chickens inn the 1st place with all the aggravation....

Every since I called Verizon about the phone, this darn computer is slower than mollasses. I wonder if they're trying to force us out. If I call again they might put up a cell box and pull the land line.

You can ferment their layer or add some to the grains to get anything they maybe missing. You don't have to ferment only grains. I personaly plan on only doing they're layer with some added grains to start out with to see how they do. Right now i'm only doing chick starter to my chicks. Once turkeys are gone then will try the ladies. I'm just looking to cut food bill down and if it takes me 15 min a day where i'm probably just sitting around any ways doing nothing i'll do it.

What a gorgeous day!!! Finally some beautiful sunshine! Cleaning out my shed today, someone is coming for the washer and dryer I listed. It'll be nice to get those out of there and make room for the mower this winter. I just hope it doesn't take up the entire shed! I still need to get to my hay that's in there.

Hope everyone is enjoying this weather!!

spent to much time on this thing, but did mow some grass and filled up an entire compost bin. I hope it will settle and I'll have some more room. Still much to mow.

Had plans to make an unside down pear cake but had to go to get some Cream of Tartar and spent to much time in walmart and the feed store.
