I'm a little bummed I bought what I thought was two Leghorn pullets they looked the same at the time of purchase.I started to noticed a disproportion in growth rates and got worried that the coop/run they were in with the silkies was too small and someone wasn't getting enough food. So I moved them to the big coop. Well Today I took a really good look and One is definitely a leghorn but the other I want to say is either a Rhode Island White or maybe a White Plymouth Rock. Mix ups and mistakes happen so I'm sure someone has my leghorn and I have someone else's Rhode Island White. I really wanted two leghorns, at this point I will take any color variation in a pullet. I'm not even mad at the guy he was sick and his helper was trying and did the best she could. But ugh ugh ugh ugh It's winter and getting someone close to me that has one is rediculous. I was thinking about just getting an Ancona but in the end I would still want the leghorn as well. I understand that I will be okay and can probably wait till next year but I don't want to wait I want her now!!

So another chicken owner got her chicken's stolen, **** two legged predators.
i really like my White Plymouth Rocks .one is quite friendly ..I can hug her & pet her all I want & she just relaxes ..

stolen chickens ? No dogs at her house ?

Gramma I'm sure white plymouth rocks are great chickens especially as pets but I really wanted a few white egg layers that I could bread I I already have enough production egg layers to make more hybrids. But I really wanted to breed some Leghorns and give the white eggs to my dad, I mean I do have a brabanter (white egg layer) but I'll willing to part with her if someone is interested in a breeding program in NY. So we will see. I'm also getting Cream Legbars for blue eggs I just like that breed. So again Imma post around the Rochester Chickens forums to get my leghorn and see if someone wants my other girl and if not I will keep her. I leaning towards the idea that she is a Rhode Island White she has an attitude. Seems my chickens are either nice or nasty LOL

Glinda and Evanora....the frizzles are "quaint". The Splash new Silkies
are BEAUTIFUL.

Will be waiting to hear reports on your Silkie breeding. Aria

Well do I ever have a case of lice over here. Almost killed my little black silkie. Found her laying in the yard, cold to the touch, not moving, and thought she was done for. Still, I had to try, so I picked her up, dropper fed her some nutri drench, dusted her with Sevin, got her with Eprinex too since I'd been planning to do the flock anyway, and stuck her under a heat lamp. Three hours later, she managed to struggle to her feet and gulp down water like crazy. Now she's sleeping, and she has a dish of scrambled eggs for when she gets hungry. Seriously, this is one tenacious little bird. I thought she was a goner.

Checked some other birds too and yep, we have lice. Lots of lice. Don't know how I missed it since I handle these guys daily. Anyway, they're all dusted. Has anyone else almost had a bird die from lice? And these are lice, not mites. I did read that body lice in chickens will chew through the skin to drink blood from the developing quill of a feather, so if that's really the case, then blood loss would explain what happened to my silkie.

I'm thinking I'm giving her a bath tomorrow to get all the eggs off her since she's covered in those too and the last thing she needs is a repeat in ten days.

Just got over them here. Well mites I don't know about lice. Neem oil sprayed on anything wood and dust baths in wood ash several times. Then I waited ten days after the last one and gave them another wood ash bath. I haven't seen any mites since the 2nd dust bath :)

How long does the neem oil help keep the mites off the surface of the coop? I'm thinking of picking some up today.

Well, I just got done posting in a thread where the person wanted to keep 18+ hens in a coop that was 16 square feet, and most of that space taken up by nesting boxes and food and water, and on top of that not provide adequate run space too because they are in violation of their homeowner's association by having them and want to try to hide them. I think I may have come off as harsh, but come on, 18 hens? I wouldn't even keep four in there. I'm not crazy am I? I mean, 18 hens in less than 16 square feet? To me that's cruel.

Wow, yeeea I would definitely say that's a tight fit, especially with what I'm currently trying to research for my Silkie pairings this winter. I read 5sq ft per bantam sized bird and I don't feel right putting a pair in 9sq feet! I couldn't imagine even 10 birds in a 16sq ft coop!

On top of that, they've already got six birds, which would be a squeeze in there, and according to some other posting they've done, they're already picking each other's feathers in the small area they've got them in now :( I dunno, I could post the thread if anyone wants to go give advice? I'm just really worried I came off sounding harsh and preachy and they won't listen to me, especially since someone else posted in the thread basically validating their idea.

Well unfortunately, no matter what you say to some people, they're going to continue to do what they want to do. I don't know if they were looking for advice on that thread an that's how it all came about but if no one else is jumping in then really there's nothing else you can do but just hope they make the right decisions in raising those chickens. :-/
