NY chicken lover!!!!

My one girl went broody in July for week and a half and then started moulting and is just finally starting to regrow her feathers back in. Out of 7 laying hens only 1 is laying......I went from 21 eggs a week to 7 a week last week. This is not paying their feed bill lol
I hope the others don't take so long to molt

Well, if we were racing with most eggs a week, We would be pretty close to a tie axcept I have 29 hens and get about 4 eggs a day. They all have went into molt.:th

At least you're getting AN egg a day! Lol try having 6 hens, 3 ducks (one of which should be laying by now) and no eggs whatsoever! Before ya know it I'm gonna be going out there saying "show me the eggs!"

Well glad to hear I am not the only one waiting forever on eggs.........my pep talks haven't been working :)

That's what I went through I had to add a light and up the protein I hope that once all my girls are laying I won't have to do this again and those who need a break next year can get it. But until then the 9 out of 16 who are laying need to lay right now!! I just bought a ton of feed to up the protein seems that the hybrid production layers need that more than light.

night night
Sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite.

I've been letting my bantam silkies free range with the big girls and it is a sight to see these tiny chickens run around with the big girls. Our brabanter won't even let the roo near her lol he tries everything.

Country boy that's tough LOL ugh I haven't had anyone go through a serious molt yet but I remember when my hybrids were going through a baby molt in may OMG it looked like a pillow exploded, and then they got huge.

For me it's the BR who are molting one after another. Stewie who led the fad has gotten her feathers back, she is sleek and dark. Then one of the three Gabbys who is starting to have some tail feathers grow back and look like a hen again. Another is in the sad, mopey, tattered stage, and the final one has some faded feathers, and although she seems pretty perky, I'm pretty sure those faded ones will be falling out. This is going on and on. On a good day, when I go to the coop several times, I get four eggs. There are 15 hens. If I don't go out there I seem to only get one or two eggs. Hmmmm.

Ummm it's PITCH black here at night, I never go out there in the dark! Lol I'm too scared. Even though we apparently have no predators coming into the yard, I'm still a baby and will not go out there. If I ever forget to lock them up and it's pitch dark out there, I sends husband out there with a flashlight to do it. But I will check her tomorrow and see if she has many new feathers coming in that explain the feathers dropping off her. ;-)

Well now see here's the story on being scared of the dark.

A mother needed her broom one night, from the back porch and told her son to get it.

He replied, " but mommy it 's dark out there".

She said , "Just get me the broom."

He replied, "but mommy it's dark out there and I'm afraid".

She said, "You don't have to be afraid, God's out there."

So he opens the door and sticks his head out and says, "God please hand me the broom".

I don't have pics but I've taken colored and white Christmas lights and strung them all around my garden and in the chicken runs. I also have a spot light on the back of the house.

We live across from the ESM stadium and when there is anything going on there the lights , light up the whole back yard all the way to the woods.

As for eggs?

I just go out carrying the ax and singing, "Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, hen's gotta lay or she's gonna die. Can't help lovin those hen's of mine". ( From the move Showboat)

Funny you said that because JUST this morning when I was walking back to the house from letting the chickens out, I thought, Man, I can only have so many chickens, if these girls do not get back to their laying schedule that they were on last year do I get rid of them and start over? Or do I continue to let them free load and just keep feeding them? LOL I swear it's like they all heard me say "I wanna start hatching this year" and have been messing with me by not laying! Ugh

I wish I had a way to do that but I don't. Honestly if they had laid all summer I wouldn't care, I understand that they do take a break from laying and probably need it but I didn't get nearly the amount of eggs from them this year that I did last year - and last year is when they hatched! So I got more eggs from them from the time they started laying last year, I wanna say end of August is when we got our first egg, thru to Spring time this year and then barely got anything all summer up until now. Owell. Hopefully someone will start up soon.

Stony congrats on the new layer!

I've got 2 girls in a molt right now, the two younger ones that were laying have gone on strike since everyone moved into the new coop. Now I'm waiting on the barnies, EE and the Brahma to start up. Any day now girls!

I hope everyone else starts to get some more eggs soon!

Has any one used those little solar yard lights in the coop for a little bit of light or would it not be worth it?

I expect when the warm weather gets here again , they will start. I will have separated them and keep the incubator going. My orps and cr's have not laid an egg for weeks. I really think they might not be getting enough light, but I am loathed to put one in the coop. (sorry I just like lines I've heard or read. " I am loathed" )
