NY chicken lover!!!!

I really need to make one of those bucket waterers. I need to get the drill bit size in order to do so though. I can probably pick it up at the local hardware store. But then of course I'd also run into the problem with it freezing. I'm assuming these aquarium heaters need electricity to work? I already have enough going on with cords outside.

Yeah the heaters are electric, but at 50w you aren't using much power. The heaters are like $15 at Country Max. I ordered a bunch of nipples because they were cheap so I have some extra.

That's what I'm saying, I see ducks all the time around here in the ponds and lakes nearby. Some migrate, but obviously not all make the trip down south in the winter.

and some are what are called resident ducks. They live here all year round as ours do. Same with geese. Some are migratory and some are known as resident geese

The fermented feed I might try in spring I don’t have a single place to even try it at. An animal would eat it before anything could happen. When I build a bigger shed next year I will do it in there.
I was wondering about what I could do about the water issue we just bring out fresh water in the morning and removed the dish at night when we lock them up. That way we can easily refill the water and just bring it to them in the morning. I already have a light in the coop and I’m nervous about putting more electric items out there but I might.

Stony – that is awesome that you and your wife do things for a more substainable lifestyle. I would love to get there one day as well! I specially love all the wood working and cooking.

Tab – glad you got some stuff done while the little one was asleep, that was the time when I would take a nice relaxing shower! Adult time so treasured LOL

Lynzi – I love the pond, is that where the duck house is or just some shelter? I’m loving all your ducks. My son wants those dark green call ducks and I want Muscovy ducks.

So I set 9 eggs at 99F degrees and 55% humidity. So we will see how that goes. I’m using the sponges which helps keep the humidity. And then a bit higher humidity during lock down I was thinking around 75%.

A neighbor came over to my house the other day to talk to me about all the cats in the neighborhood ( I so didn’t give a care) and was like don’t trap mine. BLAH BLAH BLAH and then some stuff about the other neighbors BLAH BLAH BLAH. Then brings some stuff off the ineternet about keeping chickens in the winter. But the best thing was that she told him a in very shaky voice that on the chickens waffles I should put Vaseline (she says this while gesturing to both the comb and wattles on the animal.) So I wouldn’t laugh in her face I just quickly said yes I know about that. Meanwhile I’m thinking well I normally like agave nector or honey on my waffles but I will see if the chickens like Vaseline on theres!!

She was a little tipsy and couldn't talk right.

So yesterday I let the chickens out and my roo went running while the others didn’t except my faverolle, meanwhile roo starts exploring in the little bit of snow and then looks back for his girls and calls them and they just look out there. He kept calling and calling finaly a few wondered over the silkies did go out which I’m not surprised since I’ve seen them hanging out in the rain with no problem. Today they went out with no issue!

Funny someone said their birds were trying to fly out the coop and not touch the white stuff Love it. My roo flys like a majestic eagle or so he thinks.

Right, well especially those ducks that hang around the park ponds. They stay all year because they consider that group their home and family.

I never thought I'd be so excited to see my ducks waddling across the snowy yard! It was such a pretty site to see.

wait till it hails on them. Ducks LOVE severe weather. Ours look straight up at the sky and tyr to catch the hail. Then after it is over run around like fools trying to eat all of the fallen ice

Thanks Miquwid! I'm very happy with the way the pond turned out and how it's holding up. Love my ducks more than the chickens (Sorry cheeps!) Just today I was cussing out swear words as I came up on the porch and saw at least 3 piles of you know what. I took my poultry netting down for winter and because I had moved the coop closer to the house. So they are out free ranging again. I came home from Target today and with all the snow melting and mud everywhere, I mustn't have seen the chicken crap as easily, had to spray off my MK boots before entering the house. I soooooo need to find water proof boots that I don't care about getting dirty in the yard while I'm walking around. Ugh. Anyway, LMBO at your neighbor. Waffles?!? That is hilarious! I would have bursted out laughing. LOL Last year my two orp hens would not leave the coop if there was snow on the ground. Well eventually after the like the 5th day of me opening the door and waiting for them to come out, Stella, finally flew out (I'm sure hoping to make it to the drive way) and landed right smack in the snow, completely stuck! I had to shovel a path to the middle of the lawn to get her out. It was quite the scene! There had to be at least 12 inches of snow on the ground at that point.

Forgot to mention, that "house" that is out there by the pond is their OLD house when they were younger, it had the "TV" run attached to it...I'm no longer using it at their house so I decided to place it out there to make the it look more like "their home" but they don't use it. I still just like the look of it out there. Right now they have the orps old coop since they have a new mansion.

This I definitely know after chasing them around earlier this year in the start of a huge thunderstorm! I think after coming on here and posting about my chasing them but being unable to get them in their coop it was you who said not to worry about them because they love severe weather! LOL
