NY chicken lover!!!!

For those of you with Silkies, do you provide them with any additional heat (light bulb)? I read somewhere where they recommended it. As I have 5 adult Silkie mixes and 3 teens in an 8x10 coop; Is there enough to keep each other warm? 2 of them huddle on the floor, while the 3 other adults roost. (The 3 little ones bunch in a corner) I'm thinking of providing something on the nights that get down in the teens here.
I never did last year and they seemed ok but ALL 6 that were in that coop at the time always went up to the coop and huddled together. This year, with their only being 5 in there at the moment, and none are going up to the coop to "roost" or huddle together I'm thinking about using the heat lamp in the shed just to get some kind of warmth in there. Not placing it directly on them but just in front of the coop so if someone IS cold and needs the warmth its there? IDK. I'm kind of frustrated that they don't go up to the coop at night. They just huddle together in the run underneath.

I took part of the venison carcass out to the chickens on Monday, it's nearly picked cleaned.  Everyone thought I was nuts.

DH's deer was a spike with very long spikes, reminded me of an antelope.  It was nice sized though.

I don't think the others on OT thread who have them add extra heat and they get wx like us.

They are big poofs of feather I would think they would be warm all winter :D

I did have silkies once and I think they make their own heat. I swear I saw an eerie green glow coming from the coop. Gave me the willies good and proper.

LOL, that is a creepy picture, Rancher! Maybe those Silkies ARE from another planet, as you often say!

Miquwid - good luck on everything you've got going there....ill bird, the hatch....!

Lynzi - I think you need to do some kind of dance to the Chicken Gods or something.

Your girls are slackers! I've got one or two left like that...! By the way, I don't know anything about ATV's, so can't help you out there. Good luck.

My Coronation Sussex, "Cracker" laid her 1st egg today! That means 5 / 7 birds are doing their "thang!" Ironically, now it's just the biggest and the smallest holding out. I swear, the biggest girl, one of my Columbian Rocks, "Ursa", is like Baby Huey. She is just gigantic, but still has a pinkish comb and wattle. Come to think of it, I think I will nickname her Huey, LOL! I call her my late bloomer. And then there is my small Brabanter, "Gertie." Who knows when she'll start up; she is the one most like a pet with her special needs, and I almost can't imagine she'll every lay!

TOB thanks the worst that happens is we cull the one bird and i will one extra silkie instead of two. I'm surprised all 9 eggs were fertile and developing now we will see what hatches in 2 weeks.

I added a light because all my girls are new layers starting in August. The idea is not to need the light next year with enough chickens n breeds. We eat eggs a lot.

My silkies survived last winter with no probs so no heat for them. But i put thier coop in the big coop's run so all should be even better than before.

Love the picture Rancher!

Thats when my chickens started laying last year after starting with them the weekend of Easter last year. I didn't do anything different with them last year, just left them alone and they laid all winter thru to this Spring. Then this summer is when everything went wacky, which is why I'm shocked I'm not getting eggs right now.

I have 3 Marans. A Black copper, a blue, and a blue wheaton. None of them have ever layed dark eggs. They always lay eggs that are a little darker and they have dark spots on them.

The one in the middle is from one of the sexlinks, the rest are from the marans.

I know someone was talking about the eggs light colored

Do you have a photo of the chicken who lays these? I have a girl laying an egg just like these and I don't know who it is!

Edit note:

Scratch that. Remember a few pages back I asked if my Barred Rock hen looked like a Roo because her pattern seemed different than her sisters? Looks like she could be a Cuckoo Maran. I also have some EE cross girls that looks like Blues.

This is completely off topic but I figured you folks would be the best to ask since most live in areas like myself or even own one of what I'm looking for....But I am looking for an ATV that is more kid friendly than adult. Something that is like around 80cc or a little bit bigger but doesn't not go too fast. I'd like to find one for my son for Christmas and the only places I've been able to find this size is online. Doesn't anyone in the Syracuse area know of a dealership that sells the models for kids? I'd really like to get him something he can use in the yard and because there really isn't a place to ride bikes around here I thought it would be neat to look into a smaller ATV for him to use and eventually my daughter as well. For those that own an adult size ATV, do the dealerships generally carry smaller ones for kids or no? I just hate to make a purchase like this online and have something go wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated - feel free to PM me as I know this is really off topic...
I've seen in some of the catologs for Toys r Us, sears I can't remember which one but there are big kid 4 wheelers. I don't know how big/old your son is. There is also a used car dealership in Cortland that I see little 4wheelers out front of all the time on Rte13 just before Aldi's.
