NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning All,
Ducks were in their coop overnight so I woke up to a nice egg resting in the clean wood shavings instead of frozen and in the snow!

And THAT'S how I imagined finding my first duck egg! LOL I'm going to have to check out whats available on ebay for hatching eggs. The batch I got from ke didn't do well at all. I'm not sure what happened. No spider veins, just ones that looked like blood rings.

Is that an issue that comes about from incubation methods? I didn't do anything different from the way I've hatched before. Kept the temp at 100-102, and the humidity at 45%. I'd actually like to give a go at hatching some duck eggs. I'd rather have a duckling around than a chick right now. Someone posted a video to wall a while back with this duckling following the human around. I loved it. I miss having ducklings.

And all grown up:

Love the duckers!
all I can think of while watching that video is wet sloppy duck poop everywhere in that house . Ducks poop an awful lot and it is wet stuff

Lynzi--congrats on the egg in the coop. How goes your war on mites?
Thanks Pharm! War on mites is better than what is was a couple of weeks ago. The last time I checked was the day before my splash had died and they were all mite free, from what I could see anyway. Today I went out there and saw one or two on my lavender hen, and quite a few on my lavender roo. I'm NOT bringing them in for more baths, I'm just going to keep dusting them with the DE since I am all out of Sevin. But other than that, I will not do anything further. I can't keep stressing out about these stupid bugs. A few is't going to kill them, so I will do my best to keep it under control by dusting them from time to time since they don't have a desire to do it themselves apparently.

OK NY, the snow is here. Been snowing hard since noon. I slipped and slid home. Not sure that I'm going to the funeral home to work. They are not going anywhere anyway. Be safe.
Not a chicken in sight, everyone must be hunkered down.

I'm seeing lots of foot prints out back, like I've never seen before. Snooping around the coop. I do know a neighbor has a dog and another has dogs. They seem to be coming from that direction. Not directly from the woods themselves.

I will be making some trips out there in the evening to see what's what. Not big prints but bigger than a house cat. Could be a fox, but I hope not. I'll have to devise a plan to deal with it.

Its probably that cat you saw ...there feet look bigger as tracks than you expect .

Snowing like crazy over here. I decided to keep everyone locked up in the run today to try to teach the young birds to sleep in the darn coop, since they all kept sleeping all over the place. We'll see if they're convinced. Gave them a glug of AVC in their water today to help them with the cold, since some are still a little young. Ducks, as usual, are partying it up in the snow. They'd be swimming if I filled their pool but I don't feel like breaking the ice out of it tomorrow so they're out of luck.

I also got my hands on some kefir to use as a starter for my FF so we'll see if that speeds up the process. I gave them some food that had just soaked overnight since I overfilled the bucket a little and wanted to get the water level down some and they went to town on it so I think they'll like the FF once it's going.
